Out Music supports and praises members of the LGBT (Lesbian/Gay/Bi-sexual/Transgender) community for their talents an not their sexual orientations and the Out Music Awards honour those musicians. Musicians such as Melissa Etheridge, Sir Elton John, George Michael, K.D. Lang, Michael Stipe, and Lance Bass, TV personalities Ellen DeGeneres, Rosie O’Donnell, Wanda Sykes, and Neil Patrick Harris came out after they had become successful; but artists who came out before that success have had to struggle with the somewhat homophobic entertainment industry, striving to prove that they too belong among the best in music.

Thank you; it's just too bad that some of these truly talented people are looked over when it comes to mainstream radio play.

there is also a lot of overlooked queer talent that didn't make it onto these lists. quite sad :(

They may have been on the original long list, but like other music awards the list was pared down to just a few names.
For every one that makes it there are several others who are trying to make a living on the club circuit who deserve more.
I happen to know a couple of the people on the list.
