4th District in South Sulawesi, Drowning In Year 2050

Makassar, the land area in the 4th District in South Sulawesi threatened missing from the world map due to sea water submerged. This is revealed in Study Seminar Vulnerability and Adaptation to Climate Change, which was held by the Center for Environmental Research (PPLH) Regional Sulawesi, Maluku and Papua (Sumapapua) Wednesday, October 28, 2009.

One researcher from the University of Hasanuddin, Amran Ahmad explained, global climate change will impact on the extraordinary four districts in South Sulawesi. Four areas are Makassar, Maros, Sungguminasa (Gowa) and Takalar (Mamminasata).

"Some areas of the four areas will be drowned in 2050, or about 40 years due to global warming," said Amran Ahmad, told the seminar participants from several provinces in Eastern Indonesia.

In a study specifically examined the impact of sea level rise in the Mamminasata within five years terahir, Amran estimates, approximately 30 thousand hectares would be submerged area. Or, if compared, almost 25 times as wide as a football field. "Up an average of 1 cm per month so that the sea water in 2050 can reach heights of about 45 - 50 cm from the current position," he added.

He added that a number of areas to be submerged is a confluence area for use by the public is to live. Like the coastal village areas, ponds, paddy fields, mangroves, roads and water bodies.

"Specifically, if in Makassar, the submerged areas such as the Tanjung Bunga, 14 outer islands, Barombong," said professor of Forestry Unhas this.

Dikabupaten Maros, there are a number of areas such as Binanga Sangkara, Panaikang and Kurilompo. While the worst of these research results are Takalar area. For approximately 30 township area will be under water. One of them dalah hamlet Puntondo, the surface seawater has gone up since 2005.

From the facts that research, he recommended to the government in four districts to prepare early anticipation. Ie with adaptation and mitigation. Adaptation is done by the construction management plan for the next 40 years, while mitigation is the reduction efforts.

"The most can do is adaptation, such as high road construction. For mitigation, the increase in sea water as a result of global warming is not stemmed, "he concluded.
