    Senator Harry Reid

This was a wise move by Senator Reid. It may save his Senate seat! I just love this. We keep hearing that 75% of the public want the public option and Republican Senators do not want to give it to them. This is great, now the people will take it out on their Senators if they don't give them the public option. People need help.

Many are losing their houses and going bankrupt because of ill health and no insurance. You know, 14,000 every day lose their health insurance. Premiums are going through the roof and will continue to skyrocket. The insurance industry will continue to raise them and blame it on Obama and the public option.

This is a crisis and something has to be done! This was gutsy of Reid, It is about time! Like it or not the system is going to change. This is a great play by Reid and a great play by the White House sticking with Olympia Snowe of Maine. Harry Reid: Public option is the fairest way to go

I understand Snowe is not backing the public option as it is and neither is Joe Lieberman. When all is said and done they will. Olympia Snowe can not afford to say no. Maine is largely a rural poor State. We are approaching 100,000 in Maine without Health Care Insurance. I dare her to say no! HOW HEALTH INSURANCE REFORM WILL BENEFIT MAINE

Lieberman too came out and said he is against the public option "as it is" I keep hearing the Democrats will not get the 60 votes they need but I will guarantee you they will. Lieberman has already proven he wants to keep his seat. When all is said and done a deal will be made and the public option is some form will get through the senate though there is still some heavy lifting ahead. This is looking good

! I hear there is concern about the bill in the House. I would not worry too much. Again in the end they too want their jobs and there are too many of their constituents if they do not pass it. They will! This is great news for progressives. This strengthens the hands of Senate Democrats and makes it easier for Blue dogs in the House. They now know they do not have to walk the plank! This is really looking good. This is a great day for average Americans!

I think this is good, but I don't see how this is not going to destroy the rest of the insurance industry which employs many Americans, and will end up further killing our economy.

Hi Ladym! The opt out public option won't destroy the industry but they will go up on the rates just to say see we told you. They decide who lives and dies and do not want to be forced to cover sick people.

I heard this morning that the insurance companies take 30% right off the top. That is worse than the Mafia. Vegas is only allowed to take 18%

I also heard that Obama is geing ridiculed saying he will cut $80 Billion saving it in waste. I liswtened to it on Keith olbermann and there was an analysis done and it weas grossly underestimated.

It was more like $800 Billion because of waste and fraud. Expensive tests are given when not needed to save the Doctor time to squeeze in more patients.

Expensive procedures are used when a cheap one would suffice so Doctors can make more profit and they are trying to minimize law suits. All this has to stop and I am sure it is much worse.

    Jms,
The profit Margin for most companies in the Health Insurance Industry is about 5-6%. They rank about 26th in the country on list of industries with biggest profit margins. This idea that the Health Insurance Industry is greedy and making billions is over exagerated.

Harry Reid should be voted as well as many anyone who voted for the Stimulus or votes for any version of a Public Option.

I think this will be Harry Reid's swan song; his seat is, at this point, I think, unsavable; by adding in the public option, even with an opt out, he has alienated voted he needs to break a filibuster. Even Obama and Pelosi don't have the stones to use the reconciliation option because of what it could mean down the road if Republicans gain ground in 2010, and then use it against them.

Thanks to Harry's stroke of genius, it's bye-bye Harry, and possibly bye-bye Obama health care refor. Thanks Harry; we always knew you had it in you...

firesisle that's pretty good! You know, these Politician's have done nothing and screwed around since Bush. I wish we had the collective good sense to get rid of the vast majority of them.

On that we can both agree, my friend!

RedHanded I just saw a study that amongst other things before they do anything they automatically take 30% right off the top! I think it is critical for average Americans that health care reform pass. I don't need it but I firmly believe we have 2 economies. The wealthies is recovering but ours will not unless health care reform is passed.

It depends on how you define "profits" and how you define "off the top," but it's fair to say that the insurance companies aren't exactly hurting.

This Atlantic Monthly article from 1970 is a superb "time capsule" piece and adds an important historical perspective to the health care debate today.
