Reform

Will someone please tell Joe Lieberman he is no longer welcome in the Democratic Party?

Harry Reid and other Democrats have bent over backward the last couple of years keeping Lieberman happy as they approached the magic number of 60 votes in the Senate needed to cut off Republican filibusters.

They figured it was all right to allow Lieberman to go his own way some of the time -- including campaigning for John McCain and Sarah Palin in 2008 -- as long as he was there for them when it really mattered.

They probably should have been paying attention last fall when Lieberman told Glenn "Mother Says I'm not Crazy" Beck that a 60-vote majority for Democrats in the Senate would be very dangerous for America.

Now, the first time that it really matters, Lieberman says he will join with Republicans in filibustering against health care reform.

I think it's a big mistake. Democrats are going to pass reform -- they really have no choice -- and it will include at least a weak public option. All a filibuster will do is force them to use the process known as reconciliation so that they only need 51 votes.

That apparently is what Republicans want -- to stake their future on America not liking the reform they'll get.

That's fine with me, and so is a 59-41 majority in the Senate.

Off with you, Senator Lieberman.

I don't think the Dems will use reconciliation; the political fallout would be disastrous. they do it, they're setting a very dangerous president, one that could easily be turned against them by the will of the American people.

Should 2010 turn into a Democratic train wreck, it could give the incoming Republicans a huge tool that they've avoided using in the past. In this case, I don't think the juice is worth the squeeze...

To think I actually used to have some measure of respect for Lieberman. Even after he changed parties and moved from being a Democrat to a registered Independent, I still thought he had some relevence.

That all went out the window today.

Actually, as long as he votes with he Republicans, he's very relevant.

I haven't liked Lieberman since the 2000 election and it's precisely days like these my hate for the man is justified.

I really don't understand why he is still around.

Maybe the Democrat's who he represents are really"Closet Republicans" or heaven forbid moderate Democrats.

THis is politics. When Olympia Snowe backed the Baucus Bill, Republicans were upset with her. When Arlen Specter switched parties to become a Democrat when his political life was at stake, Republicans were upset.

Democrats - Suck it up.

Not everyone is on board with this Public option. Joe Liberman just happens to reflect the opinion of millions of Americans who are like minded on this Bill.

Maybe the right side if by right you mean "party that is in favor this year". Trust me, the Democrats do NOT represent the will of the people and will be getting a big boot in the upcoming election.

What side is that if he loses re-election?
Reply By firesisle firesisle | 26 days ago
*lol* Isn't that kind of a double standard?
Posted By Redhanded101 Redhanded101 | 26 days ago
Specter's reasoning on why he switched parties was that he did not want to put his political career on the line based on the results of a Primary Race.

"I am unwilling to have my twenty-nine year Senate record judged by the Pennsylvania Republican primary electorate"

If the Democratic Party is the right side to be on, he is going to be in for a big surprise come 2010.

Joe Lieberman needs to join the GOP, forevermore.
We should force a public option with 51 Senate votes.

Possible, and they'll posture as if they're serious, but they really don't dare because they'd be setting a precedent that could easily come back to bite them in the butt in the near future. I wouldn't count on it happening.

I think you're right - in addition, they are discussing using reconciliation for education reform too which means they would have to pair both together in one reconciliation because they can only push one through per budget year. It's not only a gamble - and not only something that might come back to bite them...it WILL come back to bite them if they lose 2010 and they will forever go down in history as the party that ran on a bipartisan ticket and used reconciliation for a huge piece of legislation that was not what reconciliation was intended to be used for.

Rick Weissenstein, a health care analyst for Concept Capital's Washington Research Group said: "I think it would be perceived, certainly by Republicans and moderates, as a last ditch effort to pass something that didn't have popular support," he said. "If you've gotten to that point, in some ways you've kind of lost the war."

OVer the summer it was thought to never be something the Democrats would resort to...now it seems it is.

The only question I have is this: Why would the current Democrats ever place their futures on the line to allow this verses waiting a re-writing a bill that the American people support and one that would win bipartisan support?

Have we really come to that point in this country?

If so, unfortunately - they will use reconciliation in a way it was not intended to be used for and it may be the end of utopia for the Democrats who at one point were said to have anchored 40 years or more of majority after the Bush years.

Things sure do change quick.

Joe Lieberman had my respect because he voted YES on a measure to post bills online for 48 hours before they were voted on. The rest of the Democrats voted NO! This is why I think the Democratic party either needs to be dissolved or taken over by the Blue Dogs and people like Joe Lieberman! The Democrats don't even try to hide their political corruption any more. They just openly screw the people of the USA at every opportunity.
