Will someone please tell Joe Lieberman he is no longer welcome in the Democratic Party?
Harry Reid and other Democrats have bent over backward the last couple of years keeping Lieberman happy as they approached the magic number of 60 votes in the Senate needed to cut off Republican filibusters.
They figured it was all right to allow Lieberman to go his own way some of the time -- including campaigning for John McCain and Sarah Palin in 2008 -- as long as he was there for them when it really mattered.
They probably should have been paying attention last fall when Lieberman told Glenn "Mother Says I'm not Crazy" Beck that a 60-vote majority for Democrats in the Senate would be very dangerous for America.
Now, the first time that it really matters, Lieberman says he will join with Republicans in filibustering against health care reform.
I think it's a big mistake. Democrats are going to pass reform -- they really have no choice -- and it will include at least a weak public option. All a filibuster will do is force them to use the process known as reconciliation so that they only need 51 votes.
That apparently is what Republicans want -- to stake their future on America not liking the reform they'll get.
That's fine with me, and so is a 59-41 majority in the Senate.
Off with you, Senator Lieberman.
