During the past few years candidate Barack Obama and many Democrat leaders in Congress relished the opportunity to remind voters of what they believed was a delayed government response to Hurricane Katrina by President Bush and his disaster relief team. Although much of the blame should have been directed at the preparedness steps taken by the Democratic Mayor and Governor, the media preferred to jump on the Democrats’ bandwagon.

Now that President Obama has declared the H1N1 Virus outbreak a National Emergency, it clears that these same media outlets are giving the president and his administration a free pass. Despite the fact there are severe shortages of the H1N1 vaccine throughout the country and the peak period for infections is already upon us, journalists in the media seem unable to confront the administration about the reasons behind these shortages.

The administration, to its credit, identified and went public with the potential threat of the H1N1 virus several months ago and drew the necessary attention to this new virus strain. So it’s puzzling to understand why the administration has the country woefully unprepared to combat the virus with shortages and delays in delivery of the requisite vaccine.

Officials at CDC (Center of Disease Control) continue to report the spread of the virus throughout the country, including close to 100 deaths. How many deaths or cases of H1N1 must it take for the media or Congress to investigate the Obama administration’s inadequate response to this “National Emergency”?

"How many deaths or cases of H1N1 must it take for the media or Congress to investigate the Obama administration’s inadequate response to this “National Emergency”?"

Wait, so Obama is brewing up the vaccine in the white house basement?

Please. I was not suggesting Obama produce the vaccine in the White House. But since the Obama administration made such a big deal out of the virus and the threat it posed to our population to pull out all the stops to get enough vaccines produced in time to vaccinate a majority of the most at-risk members of our society.

Sadly, the Obama administration fell short despite having plenty of advance notice of the threat of the virus.

The facts are what they are.

    CFHG,

So Bush's response to Katrina was a-okay as far as you're concerned?

Declaring something that's killed at its peak 100 people a National Energency is not enough for you? All the things being done are not enough?

The government isn't making the vaccines is it?

If we are now comparing the H1N1 virus to the fallout from Katrina then by far Katrina was the bigger disaster that Bush despite early warning did nothing.

Then after being told what had happened, did nothing for a long time.

The Canadian Mounties made it to New Orleans before FEMA did.

Shortages are due to the drug companies developing and producing the vaccine. Obama declared a national emergency to speed up delivery of vaccine and allow doctors to go across state lines to perform vaccinations without having to get a new license. The media isn't saying anything bad because he is doing something which is far above and beyond what the Bush administration was able to do during Katrina. They did nothing. They sent in Blackwater to exterminate anyone trying to trespass on rich peoples properties. Seriously before you make gut posts maybe you should do some light (or in your case heavy) reading on the subjects you are writing about.

    Sff,

If you did any research yourself, you would have mentioned that the Mayor of New Orleans and the Governor of the State at the time of the Katrina disaster, were both Democrats that fell asleep at the wheel and made the subsequent rescue efforts that much more difficult. The local & state government were incompetent at every step of the way and should bear a lot of the responsibility for the delay in rescue efforts.

Thanks for reiterating something in the article like I am unable to read or something. I know you are looking for every chance to burn Democrats but come on man. Yes the local officials that overlooked shoring up the levees are to blame and the governor should have jumped into action as well. The fact is when a natural disaster destroys an entire city and kills over a thousand people the federal government needs to help its people. Bush stalled on sending FEMA and once they got there their priorities were all of whack and money went in all the wrong directions. No one should bear a majority of the responsibility. The federal governement along with the local and state goverments should have been working their ass off to help the people of New Orleans. And in the last three years of Bushco still nothing was done to help improve the situations of the worst neighborhoods. State and local had no way to improve the economic situation of entire towns. Only the Fed could have helped. I doubt Obama is doing anything but once again this started with Bushco and that is where this article focused on. So don't be pissy with me, I didn't lie.

Though the H1N1 story may be blown out of proportion, it is still important that people get vaccinated.
