Last night I attempted to deposit a check of $1000 at the ATM at my branch of Bank of America. The ATM advised me that the check was "not a legitimate check" and that it would return it to me. The check was not returned - it was not credited to my account - all I got was my card back. Oh - and the check was identical to one I had successfully deposited the month before (same issuer same type of check).
I called immediately to make a claim - their claim system is down. Went to the bank this morning and had the bank officer make a call for me to the claims department so I could speak to a person. I was told by the representative that Bank of America had 10 days by federal law to issue a credit to my account and that by the time they investigated the entire issue it could take a total of 90 days to rectify. Yes that's right..90 days.
One thousand dollars that should be in my account today - isn't - all due to an error that was clearly the fault of Bank of America. Apparently this happens all the time - I was advised by a teller that checks like this go in a 'discard' stack and are investigated later by ATM services.
I feel simply...robbed. There is no excuse for any of this. Has anyone had something similar happen to them?
