A stack of McDonald's Big Macs and French Fries

This sounds like a 'Twilight Zone' episode. Imagine living somewhere in which you did not have any access to McDonald's restaurants. Wouldn't you go out of your mind? Well, this strange scenario is happening in Iceland due to the financial crisis the country is going through. Iceland's three restaurants in their capital, Reykjavik, will be shutting down this weekend. Since there currency has lost a tremendous amount of value of the past year, there would be no way in which the restaurants can make any profit. Operating costs have doubled just because of Iceland's economic crisis. So to all of those Icelanders that love McDonald's, this will be the last week that you will be able to eat a Big Mac in Iceland.

No, I wouldn't go out of my mind. I'd rather see the money go to mom and pop business.

You know the economy is bad when that McDonalds clown has to catch a Southwest flight out of the country. It's unfortunate for the McDonalds fans in Iceland, but it's fortunate for the McDonalds fans in Iceland. No more 99 cent apple pies, but no more 99 cent apple thighs. It's probably a good thing in the long run.

wow..imagine if that was to HAPPEN HERE IN AMERICA??? There's like a McDonald's on every 3-4 miles where I live. People would be in major depression all right, even with other fast-food resturants around.

"It's probably a good thing in the long run."

i don't think the people who have just lost their jobs would agree with you

It depends on what angle you scope the situation. McDonalds is very unhealthy. When it comes down to the health of residents in Iceland, it's probably a good thing in the long run.

With all the mega-corps to complete with, the real American dream, being financially independent, is becoming nearly impossible. I don't know about Iceland, but I wouldn't mind if they closed up shop here.

As for the food, it tastes alright, it's just horribly unhealthy. I'm sure you've seen that "Super Size Me" documentary.

"As for the food, it tastes alright, it's just horribly unhealthy"

so is all fast food, not just burgers, so are soft drinks and a multitude of food products...so do you want to close every fast food restaurant and every soft drink factory? do you want to live in a society where you are allowed to eat and drink only what has been deemed “healthy”….and if we are allowed only healthy food what about healthy life styles, you can eat healthy but still not be healthy without exercise…so do we require everyone to belong to a gym and make sure they go 3 times a week? what about sex? aids is a pandemic that everyone ignores….should we declare a state of emergency until this disease is brought under control? and do we require everyone to wear condoms? just where do we draw the line or do we draw it at all?

So you're really on me, huh?

"so do you want to close every fast food restaurant and every soft drink factory?"

Is that what I said? NO, this is what I said: "I wouldn't mind if they closed up shop here" That would indicate 1. I wouldn't mind and 2. They closed up shop themselves.

Everything else you put in my mouth was nutty. Go away!

Seriously, stop the arguing. You are arguing over McDonald's! Don't worry, the owner of these restaurants is going to reopen these restaurants early next year and will rehire all of his employees. He was closing because he could not handle the franchise costs anymore because Iceland's economy collapsed.

I agree with the troll, lecia, too. Why would she want to twist my words though? I'm not waging to have the government close every single fast food restaurant and every soft drink factory. I'm saying, if they go out of business, that's fine with me. I agree that the companies should exist unhampered by the feds.

I'll tell you what though, I've seen cockroaches crawl out of beverage machines at a fast food restaurant. I knew the workers, they said it happens all the time. That makes an unfortunate argument in favor of health control. I went into a McDonalds in New Orleans (pre-hurricane) that smelled so bad I had to turn and walk out the door. It was truly unbearable. It smelled like severe body odor, unwashed clothes, or something.

Why can't these wealthy restaurants conduct themselves decently in a free society?
