Women are increasingly putting off having babies until their thirties or forties. This has sparked a devastating trend. More babies with birth defects and genetic abnormalities are being conceived. Down syndrome is the most common major chromosomal abnormality, occurring in about 5,000 babies born each year in the United States. It is also estimated that one in three Down Syndrome babies are aborted every year.

Around nine in ten women across the globe who are told they are going to have a baby with the problem opt for a termination.

In England and Wales, the research shows that around 1,100 babies are aborted every year because of Down's syndrome, an increase from 300 in 1989/90. German women were least likely to report that they would undergo termination in the case of a fetal abnormality while Portuguese women were most likely to report that they would undergo a termination. In the US, 90% of Down Syndrome babies are aborted every year.

Down's syndrome support organisations are crying out for greater counseling impliments to decrease these precious babies from being murdered. They say that having a child with Down's can be rewarding and that the quality of life for those suffering from the condition has improved.

Doctors disagree and say that a lot of women aren't equipped or financially capable to take care of these babies and so abortion is a viable means to ending the enivitable suffering these parents will face in the future.

Prenatal screening for Down Syndrome and other birth abnormalities are a modern medical marvel and an enhancement for the life and welfare of baby and mom. A first-trimester screening test can reliably identify fetuses likely to be born with Down syndrome. More than 38,000 U.S. women every year undergo early testing -many fetuses with the common genetic disorder are diagnosed 11 weeks after conception. I had my children tested before they were born. I was grateful the good Lord blessed me with healthy children. But, I would have loved them no matter what and didn't feel murdering them because of some medical "flaw" was morally correct, if the tests had come back with ominous results.

Women over 40 years old are at a 16-fold greater risk of having a Down's pregnancy than a woman under the age of 25. My little sister is one of those who plans to wait well into her thirties before having a baby. I worry greatly for her and her future children's health everyday.

The research on aborted Down Syndrome Babies should be a wake-up call to policy-makers to focus more effort on improving education, healthcare and adult support for the rapidly growing population of citizens who have Down syndrome.

The media and the beauty magazines all display the eye of loveliness as having blond, silky hair, small petite bodies or ripply muscles (depending on your gender of course). One must be young and rich, well-educated and have a lot of material atainment. I can testify, as a public servant working with the public, that what may seem as lovely on the outside can cover the greatest ugliness on the inside! A person with serious birth defects and genetic abnormalities can be a picture of heaven, depending on your perspective on life. They can have as much value as the Wall Street broker if you are willing to look past the obvious physical differences.

It is estimated that there are approximately 60,000 people with Down's syndrome currently living in the UK. There are more than 400,000 people living with Down syndrome in the United States. In Canada, there are 40,634, Austria-10,218, Germany has 103,030 Down Syndrome people, France has 75,530, Spain has slightly fewer at 50,350, and China has a whopping 1,623,559.

In ancient Greece, babies with disabilities were left out in the elements to die. Years ago, people with Down syndrome often were housed in institutions. Launched by the educational reforms of the past quarter-century, they are increasingly finishing high school, living more independently and holding jobs.

It doesn't matter where you stand on abortion. Killing a person because they aren't deemed in your eyes as perfect is a sin! If you don't want your baby simply because they don't meet your specifications, there are a number of childless people who would find the baby perfect in their eyes.

With the statistics so high that a child will be born with Down Syndrome around the world, chances are likely that you have or know someone who has Down Syndrome. I strongly encourage you to watch the beautiful videos attached to this article .After all, it's not how many breaths you take in this world, but how many times you take someone's breath away that matter!

This is terrible. But then, does the age of the mother really affects the health of the child.

I have never met anyone with Down Syndrome that has not been a delight to be with. I believe that these children are gifts from God.

Abortion is the most selfish thing that a woman can do.
Posted By AKADE777 AKADE777 | 27 days ago
yes, Shirley, the age does matter. As the woman ages, her eggs become less viable and weaken, therefore, opening up the possibilities of her having a child with birth defects or genetic abnormalities. It doesn't matter how great her health is, how wonderful her prenatl care is, or how young her hubby is. Eggs age, end of story. A lot of this can be procured by having kids at a younger age, but that's not the whole solution. As the world economy worsens, women are going to have babies later and later. Medical advances encourage them to push the envelope too. It will not decrease by any measure, and you can expect more murdered babies and orphaned kiddos in the future.

AKIGIB: it makes you wonder where we draw the line on who lives and who dies, who is valued and who isn't.

this is horrible. i have a little brother with downs and this is absolutely unspeakable. the way i see it is if u wait too long and you know the risk of having a downs baby, and u dont want a downs baby then don't have any children. i am only 27 years old i i know this. they should know too. these shildren dont ask to be here we make them and we should love and care for them.

Down syndrome children are incredibly expensive and they require a great deal more care then the average child. Families that are comprised of a mixture of regular children and down syndrome children often face immense difficulties that lead to a great deal of turmoil within the household. Frequently it is the regular children that suffer. Furthermore, it is difficult to fathom what our society would be like if the ninety percent of down syndrome fetuses that are aborted were actually brought into this world. The financial burden that this would put on the state and the families involved is staggering and would certainly lead to a lower quality of life for everyone involved. It is a blessing that these abortions take place, not a sin. It should also be noted that this authors insinuation that it is somehow bad that women are starting to have children later in life is appalling. It is fantastic that women are waiting until later in life to reproduce. They are more financially stable and thus are in a much better position to provide for their offspring. They are also able to further their careers and contribute to society much more by waiting to spawn. Women are no longer just baby factories. By waiting to have a family they are giving themselves the opportunity to become well rounded individuals, not just homemakers. The advances in medical technology that allow us to screen for birth defects is a modern marvel that we should embrace not spurn. This article is not sad it shows that there is promise for a brighter future.

I COMPLETELY disagree with you k-lub. You should be ashamed of yourself for thinking that you are so great and mighty that you or any other human can exterminate a life simply because of costs and extra care! SHAME ON YOU!!! Exterminating babies simply because of a birth defect is WRONG and if you do so, you are no better than Hitler! He wanted a supreme race. If a Down's baby must die, than babies with AIDS, non-white babies, retarded babies, and ones with learning disorders, and those with all other defects like spina difida should die (according to the supremecy theory). For the sake of not alienating my viewers with what I wish to say, I will say this: those who think they can take creation into their own hands and chose who dies suffer from delusions of grandeur like schizophrenics, of which Hitler likely suffered from. Who says you are any better than those children? Give me your best argument to prove such a illogical claim! It doesn't matter where you stand on your beliefs, and believe it or not, I respect those on either side of the abortion fence, you have not right to decide who's life has more value.
In my house-extended family-, women and men are treaten equally. The woman actually supports the family. Betcha didn't guess that one did you? Yes, all of the children, the ex-husband, me, the dogs, the cats, and the man stays at home and cares for the kids while working part time.
Medical technology is great, but shouldn't e decided who lives or dies.
Women AREN'T baby factories, the absurdity to make such a claim against me!!!
There is no promise when our world kills innocent lives who had not chose to be conceived and have a birth defect.
I don't see Down's people or anyone of like disability making nuke bombs, raping school kids, and gang banging. We "normal people" should reflect within ourselves before deeming them a waste.
On a last note? My son has Autism! Yes! 40+ hours a work week, a child who can hardly pass the stinkin' 1st grade, and a "regular child" all do very well together. Thank you for your confidence in families with children of disabled people. It's people like you who stare at Walmart because our kid barks at the fruit and takes his shoes off everywhere because they have invisible ants in them. But, God, or whoever the "higher power" is, made him so lovely and wonderful in his eyes. I don't want a "regular child" to replace him. Maybe barking at things is actually normal!

"It is a blessing that these abortions take place, not a sin."

I don't usually swear - and I actually SUPPORT first trimester abortion - but your whole comment and in particular THIS line is bullsh**.

Waiting to have children does NOT mean you throw away responsibility. If you decide to have a child because you waited (I did) then you should accept that you run a higher risk. There is a CVS test that can be donw early that would allow for the 1st trimester abortion but most women feel it is too risky and wait until the amnio WHICH brings them well into a 2nd trimester. If they think the way you do then the CVS should be the test of choice.

I agree with you that women are not baby factories and we've come a long way in our careers but we have a level of responsibility we must also assume if we WAIT.

unadulterated bullshit, I agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and I don't cuss a lot nor do I clog the forums with long winded comments. I NEVER said you shouldn't wait to have kids. God, I wish I had. My first kid came into the world when I was 17. What I did to my poor mate to endure such a early-in-life pregnancy is regrettable, even though we thought we loved each other, we weren't ready for the responsibility. I greatly ADMIRE my little sis for waiting to have babies. I simply am speaking about those who are like 50 and 45 or something and it's a little insane to not adopt instead. Of course, it's your choice, and I don't look down pon women who chose to have babies late in life. But NEVER would I disrespect a woman and say she should be a stupid baby factory!!!!

Asher - I don't think you need to defend yourself at all. I'm floored by the comment too and I waited until I was 35 to have my first BECAUSE I had a great career.

It's the most horrible comment I have yet to read on this site. If someone wants to call me self righteous for that... then bring it on... I'll accept it fully.
Posted By Write4Life Write4Life | 27 days ago
Actually K-lub - you'd fit into the Nazi party just fine. Asher is spot on with that comment.
Posted By TanyaTalladega TanyaTalladega | 27 days ago
This is sad, I mean, they shouldn't just kill the babies because they're challenged in a way. There's medication and there's programs that can help this. And I really believe this trend is really making our existence worse...
