For as long as people have been around, there has been the opportunistic sludge that feeds off of the fears of the masses. From traveling salesmen selling snake oil as a cure-all, to a modern day spray which claims to stop the absorption of the dreaded radio pollution.

Most recently added to list of scams are the treatment hoaxes regarding the swine flu, H1N1 strain. There are promises of products which can do everything from protect you with a spray which can sterilize the air, to other more harmful plans, including the sale of a fake Tamiflu- a drug used to treat the most seriously ill from the flu.

As with everything in life, we cannot look for the quick fix, and we must use our common sense. In this day and age of having so much information right at our fingertips, we must master the art of weeding through the false claims and realize that in life there are very few shortcuts. If we want to completely avoid the flu, then stay home. Most of us cannot do that, so do some research into the vaccines, and into legitimate ways in which to strengthen your immune system. Eat right, excercise, and wash your hands often. Just be sensible. Try not to fall victim to the alarmists which create a mob mentality where people stop thinking for themselves. Get advice from your trusted physician, and then make your own choice as to how you are going to help protect yourself and your family.

Let's not let other people be the sole dictator of our actions...let's bring back good ol' common sense. I miss her.
