In the nineteen-fifties a show started in Philadelphia with a man named Dick Clark as its host. The show called “American Bandstand” was a group of teens dancing to the hits of the day, seeing their favourite stars perform, and rating new records by how easy they were to dance to. The show moved to Los Angeles and ran for decades moving from weekday afternoons to once a week on Saturday.
Later another program with the same format appeared on the airwaves; only this one catered to the R&B crowd called “Soul Train” and it was hosted by Don Cornelius.
“Soul Train” has been off the air for many years, but the awards show that paid homage to the stars that made the show a hit still exists and today honours the stars of soul music.
In November the “Soul Train” Awards will present their thirtiety year of awards from Atlanta with a tape delay broadcast later in the month.
Michael Jackson will be honoured as the Entertainer of the Year.
