I was in the Blockbuster in NDG, an okay burgh of Montreal renting some movie and sort of ticked at the late fee I had to pay on top of that, but hey, what can you do other than read all the fine print? Anyways, I had just gotten my movie and heard the sound of steel scraping against cement. I looked up and saw two old men in Trench coats and I guess they had an argument and one had shoved the picnic table away to make a point or something.
What surprised me was the squad car that pulled up super-fast and the two cops getting out with the same speed. The old man shouted something, but was interrupted by the officer shouting at him to get the F--k on the ground before him and his partner took him down in what seemed like under a minute. They handcuffed him and the old man was shouting something, it was all unintelligible, so I haven't a clue what started this and why more officers got on the scene.
I walked away at that point, in case things got nuttier than squirrel crap and I met up with a gentleman who shook his head. He asked me if it was an old man and I said yes and he shook his head again and said "All of this for an old man?" I agreed and walked up to the next block were two other women asked me what was going on. I repeated the story as best as I could in French and in English. The second woman had the same disgusted attitude as the man I spoke to. I just shrugged and kept on walking.
Not because I didn't care, but I understand now why there's so much animosity towards the Montreal Police Force and how the situation of last summer in this city escalated into a riot.
So that was my Sunday Night excitement, which has left me wondering about the role of the police force in this city yet again.
