In the United States more than 1,000 people have died of H1N1 since the flu outbreak began six months ago. A top health official said the US has seen more than 1,000 deaths or around a fifth of the world's total toll and more than 20,000 hospitalisations in the country.

Head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said until now the US has had many millions of cases of pandemic influenza and the numbers continue to increase. Meanwhile, as Americans waited for more vaccine, 46 of the 50 states were reporting widespread H1N1 flu activity, something that usually would not happen until the height of flu season. In its latest update, the World Health Organization has said at least 4,735 people have died from H1N1 flu infections worldwide since April, when an outbreak of the flu was first reported in Mexico.
