Speak English When You Go to Dallas!

Dallas, TX police chief David Kunkle held a press conference today in order to apologize to the city's Spanish-speaking community. Why was the Chief apologizing? The reason for his mea culpa is that the Dallas police department have issued 39 citations over the past three years to citizens for not speaking English. The most recent occurrence happened three weeks ago on October 2nd when rookie Dallas police officer Gary Bromley, 33 pulled over Ernestina Mondragon, 48 for making an illegal U-turn. Instead of issuing the proper ticket for making an illegal U-turn, he gave her a ticket for not speaking English. Since this case has received so much exposure, the Chief decided to have the charges dropped. This idiot cop is what gives some police officers a bad name.

When will people in the South realize that blatant racism is no longer tolerated in this society? People need to grow up and to stop discriminating others based solely upon the color of their skin. Everyone knows idiots of every skin color. So if you ever go to Dallas, Texas, speak English to the police officers.

This was because of not speaking English not skin color, although that is still a stupid reason to give someone a ticket.

But one of the racial stereotypes towards Latinos is that they should learn English.

yeah, ahol888-- and where I live in SOUTH TEXAS, a lot of the Latinos expect EVERYONE else to learn Spanish! They'll act like they can't speak English just to get a rise out of you and then talk about you behind your back like you're an idiot. America is a melting pot of a lot of languages; there is no "official" language but what that cop did was just plain stupid.

I live just south of San Antonio, OK? I've lived here for almost 20 years. Before here, my family lived in Buffalo,NY, OK I am very adaptable. I love diversity. But what I DON't appreciate is when (some) Hispanics expect everyone to bend to them and learn Spanish but they don't want to try to learn English. I have to be very careful when I say this but it's true. NOT ALL Hispanics are that way, just some. I have encountered a good number of them like that.

No need to be careful on allvoices. If they still let me do articles on here, then anything on here is fair game.

Wow. So - if I come as a foreign tourist and speak my native language, I will get a ticket? Holy cow.
What happened to the Constitution and Bill of Rights?
How backwards is this?

I am in no way racist, but I think if you are going to live in this country you should learn English, instead of expecting everyone to learn Spanish to communicate with you. Why should businesses in a predominately English-speaking country be expected to pay to post information in Spanish? Do we do it for German-speaking immigrants, or for French-speaking? No! So why is it that every where I go, there are now signs posted in Spanish???

well there is no law and there should be no law as in u have to speak english!! it is good if they learn it but they should not penalize anyone for it!

I have lived in Upstate New York for half of my life and when we went to Canada to visit, they have everything posted in English and French but MOST of the Canadian people I spoke to, spoke English. We never had ANY problems with them. But when we moved to Texas, some of the Hispanic people "play dumb' Like they don't know any English. They kinda look at you funny.. with hesitation- and they say "sorry, no English". you KNOW they know something but they just don't want to TELL YOU! It's fustrating. Those kinds of people get me mad.

It's like they don't even want to make an EFFORT to speak English but WE have to try to learn Spanish on THEIR ACCOUNT?? Uhh- no,that's not cool.
