The ruling Congress-NCP alliance in Maharashtra has stormed back to power for the third time in a row. It has registered a landslide victory in Arunachal Pradesh. However, the party fell short of majority in Haryana.
The Congress-NCP alliance, which has been ruling in Maharashtra for the past 10 years, has won 144 in the 288-member Assembly. The party needs one more seat for a simple majority. The saffron combined got 90 seats which is 26 seats less than their tally in 2004. The Raj Thackrey led MNS which made his debut in the Assembly by winning 13 seats played the spoil sport for the Shiv Sena-BJP combined.
The spectacular showing of the Congress in Arunachal Pradesh saw the party gain a two-third majority winning 42 seats in the 60-member assembly. The NCP got five and BJP three. Ten seats have gone in favour of others.
In Haryana, the Congress has emerged as a single largest party winning 40 seats, six short of majority. Congress sources in Chandigarh said, the Haryana Chief Minister Mr. Bhupinder Singh Hooda will stake his claim to form the next government. He is claiming the support of six independent MLAs.
