The Tesla Roadster

While Detroit’s electric cars remain a promise and a pipedream there’s an electric car company reshaping the auto industry by marketing a real electric car.
Tesla Motors of San Jose California is manufacturing and marketing a real car not a golf cart, the Tesla Roadster can run 240 miles on a charge and reach speeds of over a 100 miles an hour in less than ten seconds. More importantly the Tesla is a real car that those with the money can order right now, over 900 have been sold. The Tesla Roadster is purely electric powered and charged by plugging it in. It’s a powerful sports car that looks more like a Porsche rather than a box on four wheels.
Tesla is poised to transform the auto industry with a new kind of service. US and Canadian Tesla buyers can pay a little extra to get a service technician called a Tesla Ranger to come to them. The Tesla Ranger will come to their home, service the car and perform all kinds of service including inspections and software upgrades. If your car needs more service the Ranger will coordinate with a towing company to get it to a service center. This service program is based on the service provided by electronics service companies like www.zappos.com and Geek Squad. The Tesla Rangers will service Tesla vehicles anywhere that they live.
Tesla is also expanding its newest dealership or gallery is scheduled to open in Boulder, Colorado, on October 23, this Friday. Tesla will be offering free test drives this weekend in Boulder
If the Roadster isn’t your cup of tea Tesla is planning to bring out the Model S a four door family Sedan in the near future. Tesla has also gotten a $100 million dollar loan from the US Department of Energy and money from the state of California to build an electric car plant in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Tesla Motors is named for legendary inventor Nicola Tesla whose work made the transmission of electricity for home and business possible. Privately held Tesla Motors is the brainchild of Silicon Valley Maverick Elon Musk. Musk is the head of another company aiming to transform the world SpaceX which is trying to develop a private space launch capability.

They are definitely expensive, but the Tesla S-Model will be shipped in 2011 for around $50k BEFORE any state tax credit. Currently, Colorado has nearly 40% off the Roadster for 2009. Wow...

Looks like Tesla is starting a really positive movement. This car sounds very innovative. 240 miles a charge and 100 mph in 10 seconds is very impressive given the fact that no oil or gasoline is being used. The environment doesn't need any more pollution and carbon emissions, and consumers shouldn't have to pay these ridiculous prices to these oil companies, especially in this economy. It's a company based in the US. That's another plus. Hopefully more and more people get behind this movement.

The Tesla is expensive but the price is competitive with similar high performance sports cars. Interestingly enough Elon Musk just told the Toronto Star that he wants to build a low priced electric someday. He said he'd like to build it in Ontario, (his mom is Canadian). The way things are going Elon should be able to pick up some state of the art auto plants real cheap in a couple of years. Ones with names like Chrysler and General Motors on the front door.
