ORANGE PARK, Florida - The body of seven year old Somer Thompson was found under trash in a Georgia landfill. Somer, a north Florida girl, disappeared on her way home from school on Monday after she became angry with her sister and ran ahead of the group, never to be seen again until she was found in the trash.
Laura Holt, Somer's aunt said in regards to whomever killed the young girl, "I don't think they deserve to live. I don't think there's anything worse that a person can do - to kill a child and dump her in the dump like a piece of trash."
Investigators searched through at least 100 tons of trash before finding the body on Wednesday. An FBI forensic unit is helping process evidence from the landfill, about 48 miles from where she disappeared.
Police have questioned more than 70 sex offenders in the area where the girl went missing. Florida Department of Law Enforcement records show 161 sex offenders live within a 5-mile radius of Somer's home.
Somer's father, Sam Thompson pleaded for her safe return. "Somer, your daddy Sam loves you unconditionally. Stay strong and don't give up the fight or the hope that we're going to be a family again. I love you," he stated.
Tonya Jennings, a 61 year old grandmother who lives three doors away said, "We are all devastated. I knew her. We will need to be more vigilant. There are pedophiles everywhere in the area."
Mourners have placed flowers under a tree in memory of the little girl.
