Good Without God

Starting Monday October 26th, a dozen ads will be going up in New York subways:

"A Million New Yorkers are Good Without God. Are You?"

Eight Atheist Organizations have come together to pay for the month long campaign. The New York Subways carry more than 5 million riders per day and the location was chosen to target the largest number of people possible.

The organizations representatives state that the ads are not in any way meant to be "anti-religious" but are meant to provide a way for people who feel the same way to know there are other people they can talk with.

In 1990, a survey that asked what religion people (in the U.S.) prefer had 8% of the respondents marking "none".

In 2009, the same survey had 15% responding "none".

Many people believe the fastest growing "religion" in the United States are people who claim "no religion".

The main point the organization is saying is (contrary to mainstream religion) people don't need "religion" to be "good" people...

May be its true that people don't need a stamp of a religion to be good people after all. I guess everyone is entitled to their own viewpoints. I for example, am religious and ritualistic. I propagate my religion and associated rituals at my relevent religious events and on correspondingly relevent religious days. Similarly, an atheist must have the freedom to express himself/ herself with no fear of being apprehended.

A response of "no religion" doesn't necessarily indicate either atheism or agnosticism; it means they don't associate their beliefs with a specific religious dogma. While I am a Christian now, for years, as a Pagan, I practiced no religion. I had my own specific spiritual beliefs, and was certainly not an atheist.

Freedom of expression, however should be universal.

I'm all for everyone being WHATEVER they want to be (with the right to change whenever they feel the need)

Unfortunately there are a number of "people" (NOT religions) that feel they have the right to "force" people into "their" religion. It's these people who scare me...

btw - an article on what your life as a "Pagan" was like would be make for an interesting read...

Atheism is impossible. There is no way somebody as great as me is a product of chance.

I find it really funny when people try to quell things pertaining to "no religion" or "unusual religion," all while still advertising their own beliefs. What I'm saying isn't about this article, it's about reactions to it - I've heard some ridiculously ignorant responses from people locally, which is basically all I'm saying. And I don't affiliate myself with any religion, though I do have some ideas at least here or there. Pagan religions always seemed most appealing to me, or at least the most interesting. But I can't call myself devout enough for anything.
