Chicago Mayor Richard Daley has announced plans to slash funding for the popular Venetian Night Festival, the longest continuous running event the city produces. This action comes as a result of a $520 million budget shortfall due specifically to a nearly 18% reduction in hotel tax revenues.

Venetian Night, a lighted boat parade and fireworks show along the city's downtown Lake Michigan waterfront has been held each summer for the pat 52 years and was attended by over 500,000 this year.
