Afghanistan Hoax threatens to trap America in more Afghan fighting

What's New: Obama brings Vietnam Vets in White House Rose Garden

By Robert Weller

Right before our eyes a hoax is being created over whether we need to send more troops to Afghanistan. It’s a lot more lethal than balloon boy, who may have done us a favor by telling us the emperor is naked!

On one side, advisers close to President Obama say it’s too soon, even after eight years, to send more troops to the mountain country because we don’t know if we have a credible government.

On the other side, advisers close to Obama, say we can’t wait for President Karzai to prove he can be forced to be a honest leader.

I don’t know who is lying or exaggerating. So what's it going to be?

It is not a partisan issue.

These reports can become self-fulfilling, though at the moment Obama seems intent on making his own decision. If information given by inside sources doesn’t turn out to be true in a reasonable period it may be a good idea not to quote them.

Whoa. After what happened in Iraq, when hundreds of thousands of soldiers, people and insurgents died because of a phony report that Saddam Hussein had Weapons of Mass Destruction. In fact sanctions and surveillance flights had pretty much disarmed the tyrant.

Had the Vietnam experience been erased from our brains?

Some top reporters who should have known better spread the Iraq iie, based on what Dick Cheney & Company told them. To my knowledge no one has been held accountable for that whether it was a hoax or a miscalculation, except perhaps with election of Barack Obama. Instead, we could send more people to their deaths.

Even now many Americans believe Iraq was involved in the Sept. 11 attacks.

Whether it is torture, deaths from PTSD, fraudulent elections or the death of an NFL star in combat in Afghanistan, the winning argument for decades in the U.S. Has been that we can’t afford the damage that telling the truth would cause.

It seems especially ironic for all-volunteer Army, people whose commitment to truth is indisputable. If their commanders are not held responsible for not allowing wounded troops to get the treatment they need how can we expect poor grunts to stop hassling their wounded comrades. PTSD is a wound.

In civilian life, the parents of the Columbine killers gave depositions in a lawsuit. The victims’ families, who heard the depositions, say they are very important and could even help prevent future massacres. A federal court won’t let us see them because they fear copycat attacks. Wow. How many more do we need to go through.

Black is white. Lies are truth. Our people are believed to be unable to handle the truth.

Some talk show hosts are allowed to make claims that are ridiculous, and no one brings them down. Journalists whose work has been impressive until now, just don’t know how to deal with it.

Our leaders obviously know how to hold the Balloon Boy family accountable. Perhaps it is because a small lie is easier to disprove than a big lie, as Hitler said.

Excellent Report and an even more grand cause. This report and the cause there-in needs to be undertaken by the global media to protect the natives of Afghanistan, as well as to ensure that peace prevails and US does not waste more of its money on unproved rumors without the backing of solid evidence. US must use this money to deal with the piling issues of its own economy and citizens first and then venture into matters of the world.

@Robert: Its nice to hear your views Robert :) Nice to know that you also happened to cover one of the most sensational news of the independent Indian Republic, that of the assassination of the first and only woman Prime Minister of the largest democracy in world (owing to its largest population). Not to sound boastful, but its more in praise of you having been there :)

I don't really get the point of this article. What are you trying to say; that the war in Afghanistan is unwinnable or that it should never have been started in the first place?

@Changez: That what has been already done in Afghanistan is over and out, and that no further troops need to be approved for deputation in Afghanistan anymore, on lines of which decisions are being made currently.
