The fame of the Philadelphia Big 5 is due in large part to its rich history, and the history of the legendary coaches that have passed through its ranks such as: Alexander Severance, Ken Loeffler, Jim Pollard, Jack Kraft, Chuck Daly, Dr. Jack Ramsey, Jack McKinney, Jack McCloskey, Jim Lynam, Tom Gola, Phil Martelli, Fran Dunphy, John Chaney, Rollie Massimino, and Jay Wright. In addition to the honor roll of coaches, the tournament has showcased some unforgettably talented athletes and personalities such as: Eddie Jones, Aaron McKie, Ed Pinckney, Tim Legler, Randy Foye, Corky Calhoun, Dionte Christmas, Jameer Nelson, Matt Carroll, Delonte West, Bob Bigelow, Chip Greenberg, Jack Hurd, Harold Jensen, Lionel Simmons, Hal Leer, and Terence Stansbury. However, the most remarkable feature of Philly's Big 5 is arguably the venue: University of Pennsylvania's Palestra.
