Chalk River Nuclear Reactor

The Chalk River Nuclear Reactor in Ontario has been shut down with a leak... Because of this - many deaths are being predicted - but not from the radiation - Ironically, it will be from the "Lack" of radiation...

This particular reactor produces 2/3 of the radio-active isotope MO-99 (Molybdenum-99) which is used in more than 16 million CRITICAL medical tests every year...

The Reactor has a service life of from 40 to 50 years and the reactor is already 52 years old. Canada is looking at shutting down the reactor permanently and that has created a severe shortage of the isotope.

The isotope is used to take pictures of hearts, lungs, kidneys, brains, etc and is a multi-billion dollar industry that has been severely affected - only 10% of the normal inventory of the isotope is currently available.

To make matters worse, the Dutch reactor that produces most of the remaining MO-99 shut down for a month for needed repairs and needs to shut down again in the very near future for even more maintenance...

The University of Missouri is currently working to retrofit their reactor to produce the isotope, but is not expected to be up and running until 2012...

Pretty scary, and since this writer claims to be from Mesa, Arizona, would like to know how he feels about Palo Verde having now been privatized under Pinnacle West, affording now foreign investment and ownership of our nuclear reactors and nuclear generating stations.

How well are you sleeping, knowing that foreign British bankers and their minions in this globalized economy now own a huge share and stock in America's largest nuclear power plant, less than 50 miles from Phoenix.

And all you other states, the fallout from Chernobyl went as far as Ireland, so just because that plant is in Arizona, don't think that if the next terrorism initiated attack by some terrorist group on our nuclear power plant (owned of course also by some of those terrorists) won't affect you.

Since it appears that the U.S. government is selling out this country now lock, stock and barrell to foreigners across the board. Including the historic homes in New Orleans, and our nuclear generating facilities, and our bridges.

    Sleep well, America.

I've never liked the idea of "nuclear" power plants right from the day they started building them... I've never believed they were safe OR necessary - there are too many other alternatives we should have researched a LONG time ago...

This is a very disturbing development. It shows that nuclear power isn't as safe as we once thought it was but we have to consider that it is also the only real energy source for the future. It should be considered a warning and also a sign that we have to do more in this regard.
