Week five of “Dancing with the Stars” marked the halfway point of the season, the flu bug, a week of two dances, and the best scores ever for three couples.
The first of the ten remaining couples to take to the dance floor was Natalie and Alec who performed a Paso Doble’ that began on the judges table. Judge Len Goodman told Natalie that she is a very accomplished dancer but needs to work on the character of her dances. Bruno called Natalie a Wonder Woman who was slightly un-wonderful and Carrie Ann said that Natalie was a great student who moved well. Natalie and Alec received a score of 22 for their dance.
Next on the dance floor were Aaron and Karina who performed an Argentine Tango that had the judges praising the performance and Carrie Ann giving Aaron a kiss. Aaron said that he paid attention and listened to what the judges said to him and it paid off earning the couple a score of 24.
Michael and Anna took on the Paso Doble’. Michael channeled his inner football player and had the judges praising the performance and earned Michael and Anna the best score of the season with a 21.
The top couple for the past few weeks Mya and Dmitriy took to the floor next with an Argentine Tango that Bruno called intricate, precise and sophisticated. The couple earned a score of 27 for their dance.
Mark and Lacey took on a Paso Doble’ that had Bruno calling Mark Mephisto. Carrie Ann called the dance exciting and Len said it has posture, passion and performance. Mark and Lacey earned their best score of the season with a 26.
Donny and Kym performed an Argentine Tango. In their preview package Kym told Donny that the dance required lots of passion and then asked him if he knew what it meant. Donny responded by saying that he had five children. The performance had the judges brimming with accolades. Len called it truly Donny’s best dance and Bruno said that Donny had finally come over to the dark side. While waiting on the scores Donny said that he felt amazing and the judges agreed giving the pair the highest score of the night with a 29.
Youngesters Louie and Chelsie performed the seductive Argentine Tango that brought some mixed comments from the judges but earning Louie and Chelsie their best score of the season with a 22
Melissa and Mark also performed an Argentine Tango despite Mark having been sick all week. The dance brought praise from Carrie Ann but fell a bit out of favour with Len and Bruno earning the couple a score of 23 for the dance.
Kelly and Louis performed a Paso Doble’ that brought extra pressure and nerves for Kelly since the dance was performed to her Dad’s hit “Crazy Train” and Ozzy was in the audience ever the proud Papa along with brother Jack. Judges noted that Kelly has the potential to be a very good dancer saying that when she is good she is very good. Kelly and Louis received a score of 24 for their dance tying their best score.
The last couple to take the floor in the solo dances was Joanna Krupa with a new partner Maksim Chmerikovskiy since Derek had caught the flu and was home in bed. Despite the short notice of a new partner the pair earned a score of 24 for their Argentine Tango. Derek was in attendance and said that he could have danced but felt it was better to let Maks perform.
The 10 couples also performed a group dance that brought back the disco era. The Hustle was choreographed by Mark’s Dad and award winning dancer Corky Ballas. In a performance that resembled an afternoon of “American Bandstand” each couple had a chance to show off their disco skills during the dance. Judges did not score the dance but made a few comments with Bruno saying it was sublime and ridiculous at the same time. Carrie Anne said that it looked like a “Crazy Train” and Len said that Mark, Aaron and Donny did an outstanding job.
Along with eliminating another couple on the results show the 16 professional dancers from season nine will perform Ballroom and Latin routines that pay tribute to Michael Jackson. Nine time Grammy Award winning artist Norah Jones will also perform.
