The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will hold its summit at Hua Hin resort town in Bangkok, Thailand on Oct. 23, 2009. Members of this group include China, South Korea, Japan, Cambodia, Laos, Singapore, Philippines, Brunei, Burma, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand. In the meeting, disasters and economic ties will be on the top agenda. There are plans to include India, Australia and New Zealand in a bigger economic meeting. An Asean Economic Community is a target goal in 2015. The regional leaders want to improve their relations. Trade and financial barriers are aimed to be broken down. These will be a goal for professionals, business executives and skilled labor to be able to work across Asia. According to Bridget Walsh, a Singapore Management University political science teacher, the Asian economy needs to be strengthened and integrated. This is a major issue in Asia at present. Asean is also planning to create a body for human rights, a first in the region.
