A glossy, full-color advertising-type card graced our mailbox last week. Its headline chirps in touchy-feely font: "Thank You Senator Grassley." Loaded with professional photos of smiling senior citizens, it centers on a portrait photo of Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA). He looks pleased to be pictured there surrounded by the other seniors, beaming like a graduate's grandfather on graduation day. I become suspicious right away.

The card is a glowing endorsement of Grassley's concern for senior citizen's healthcare. Bemused, I recall how he told an elderly constituent this summer that if that man wanted health care equal to Grassley's he should "go work for the federal government."

"His response in Waukon wasn't very compassionate to that senior. I wonder who paid for this expensive printing and postage." Then, looking at the bottom I see it: some group named "Medicare Today."

Website #1: Medicare Today

The fine print on the bottom of the front page reads: "HLC launched the Medicare Today program in November 2004...."

"OK, who or what is HLC?" The plot thickens.

Website #2: Healthcare Leadership Council

In even tinier print than the first website, it says: "The Healthcare Leadership Council (HLC), a coalition of chief executives from all disciplines within American healthcare, is the exclusive forum for the nation's healthcare leaders to jointly develop policies, plans, and programs to achieve their vision of a 21st century system that makes affordable, high-quality care accessible to all Americans.

Members of HLC - hospitals, health plans, pharmaceutical companies, medical device manufacturers, biotech firms, health product distributors, pharmacies and academic health centers -..."

I ponder: "The CEO's representing the major forces of the current healthcare system's status quo? Why are they shelling out the bucks for this congratulatory postal spam?"

Now I'm more curious...

Website #3: Grassley's page on Open Secrets.org

Herein lies the real interesting data:

The Top Five Industry Contributors to Grassley's 2005-2010 Campaign Committee:

1) Health Professionals, 2) Insurance, 3) Pharmaceuticals/Health Products, 4) Lobbyists, 5) Hospitals/Nursing Homes.

Website #3 tells me that Grassley is getting a caboodle of money from the people who have the biggest stake in keeping health care system working just the way it's been working...for the people it is working the best for. And that's not Iowa's senior citizens, I'm here to tell you.

Anyway, that was a very nice thank you card that Medicare Today sent Grassley for their Healthcare Leadership CEO bosses--from the very same industries that fund his campaign! And if they carbon copied that card to our household, they likely sent it to all Grassley's senior aged constituents!

Grassley is, after all, an important Senator. As the ranking member on the Senate's Finance Committee he's a key player in health care reform. Or in blocking health care reform. He owes something to someone, I guess.

Now I wonder who he sends his thank you notes to.

---------

You can see both sides of the card in the video at the top of this post.

BE, I'd like to know, for my own benefit, what side of the health-care debate you fall on. From what I can see you recognise or think that the current system is dominated by insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies that have a stake in not giving care to people to increase profits; however I don't know if that's your stance precisely so i was wondering if you could tell me, as a slightly older person as well.
Reply By BorderExplorer BorderExplorer | about 1 month ago
You read me correctly, Changez. As for the current proposals, I'm conflicted. What I'd hope for is universal health care or "Medicare for All." Should I moderate my expectations to accept tepid movement of any kind? (That would almost feel like change for change's sake to me - or starting small and hoping for something more sometime in the future.) I'm waiting to see what they come up with. At this point some of the proposals sound to me like a windfall to the insurance companies, ie. an onslaught of newly mandated, younger, healthier customers. Thanks for asking--and doing it so diplomatically ["slightly older"], too! Your friend, Billie

excellent excellent article! I have been wanting to do one like this for a while, but I simply don't have the time. The more analysis and uncovering of the corrupt politicians and their big money friends on both sides of the aisle, the sooner we can have a functioning democracy.

Thanks for such a hearty endorsement, stillthinking. I am a strong proponent of campaign finance reform. Sounds like you are too. And I agree--both sides of the aisle are vulnerable to the influence of compaign funders.

We do need Reform. The right kind of Reform. I know for certain it cannot have the government involved in making it work.

We can correct some flaws without tearing down the entire system. We are leaving $54 Billion dollars on the table each year as a result of not including Tort Reform according to the CBO.

If we are going to clean-up healthcare, it has to include ideas from both sides. We can't be using taxpayer dollars to curry favors for Union members while slashing Medicare to the tune of 500B over 10 years.

The Postcard is cheesy and shame on Chuck, he knows better than that.

Wish we could have a government that we actually trusted. I wonder if there are countries where people are satisfied with their political leaders/system.

I need to learn about the Tort Reform that you and other posters who I think of as more conservative refer to.

You're right about ideas from both sides, Redhanded. Again: I have to learn about the 500B slash you're talking about.

Not sure if Chuck gets the blame for the postcard, but it's hard to imagine they sent it without his knowledge. Grassley used to command my respect-even though I differed from him- because he would track and denounce government spending waste. I feel disappointed in what he's evolved into. Thanks for commenting, Redhanded. Now I have to get to work and learn more about the points you're making.

Healthcare reform in the US seems to have stalled somewhat...Business as "usual" will result in the usual "business". Profits for HMOs and patients unable to afford "marketplace" healthcare :-(

You are fortunate to have a system that seems to work well for you in Canada. The system is so powerful and entrenched here that it may well never change.
