By now, I'm sure you've heard political pundit and controversy magnet Rush Limbaugh was to be part pf a group attempting to bid for ownership of the NFL's St. Louis Rams. To the absolute surprise of no one, misgivings about Limbaugh's involvement in the venture were voiced from many points (including yours truly) from the moment the venture was announced.
Also in a move that surprises almost no one, Limbaugh has now been unceremoniously dropped from St' Louis Blues chairman Dave Checketts' group. Speaking purely from a sports fans, and, in particular, a football fans perpective, I am glad Checketts group got the message. I am even more glad that NFL commissioner Goodell recognized that letting Limbaugh into the upper echelons of the NFL would be a very, very bad decision for the League and the fans for many reasons, both businesswise and otherwise, and had the fortitude to voice his misgivings publicly, as did Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay.
Rush, of course, had to give his reaction. And, of course, he had to do it in the form of a 15 minute attack on everyone. Including President Obama. Yes, President Obama is, according to the world of Rush, partly to blame for his getting bounced from the Rams venture. Specifically, Limbaugh said he believes he's been made an example by a players' union seeking leverage in talks over a new collective bargaining agreement, and that he believes what happened to him was an illustration of "Obama's America on full display."
Limbaugh also blamed DeMaurice Smith, executive director of the NFLPA, whom he called an "Obama-ite," AND Al Sharpton AND Jesse Jackson, both of whom he termed "race hustlers". He then went on to say that his getting dropped was an example of the political clout wielded by the Obama administration. Oh, and the media too, saying "Believe me, the hatred that exists in this is found in the sportswriter community, it's found in the news business, it's found in the race hustler business." Limbaugh said he was victimized by a spiteful media who misreported things, made up quotes, and lied.
Well... that is quite an extensive list. Leave it to Rush to blame everyone, including the Obama administration, which, to my knowledge, has absolutely nothing to do with NFL team ownership negotiations. I highly doubt, with all that is going on in the country and the world, that President Obama, sitting there in the oval office, has the time to turn to his sectretary and say, "Oh, and would you get Limbaugh out of that group bidding for the Rams? That honky needs to be made an exmple of. Call Al and Jesse and make it happen." Anyway, isn't the President more of a basketball guy?
Yes, Rush blames everyone... the NFL, the media, the Obama administration, the players... everyone but the obvious place the true blame lies. With himself. I'm not condemning or condoning Limbaugh's politics. My point is that Limbaugh has made his living saying the things he says. He stands by them, right or wrong. And he has to live with the consequences of that choice. Basically, it's live by the sword, die by the sword. In this case, his chosen professional career and the way he conducts it has cost him a shot at a dream of his.
I do believe the guy really does love football. But this is a case of reputation preceding, plain and simple. Rush going on his show and blaming everyone in the known universe and the Obama administration for his failed attempt to own an NFL team is just Rush being Rush. But I hope that maybe, possibly, in private... Rush knows that he was pushed out because he created Rush Limbaugh, the public persona. And it is that persona, the one that made him so famous (or infamous as the case may be), the one that earns him his living, that is really at fault.
