NEW YORK - Carmen Huertas, 31, pictured in the photo was drunk as she drove her car packed with seven young girls going to a slumber party to her home. Huertas lost control of the car, the vehicle flipped over several times and slammed into a tree on the Henry Hudson Parkway. The accident happened at 12:45 a.m. Sunday.
Sixth grader Leandra Rosado, 11, was tossed from the car. She died less than an hour later at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital, leaving her single father completely devastated. Two other girls were seriously injured but are expected to survive. The rest of the girls had a variety of injuries, including broken legs, wrists and trauma.
Huertas was driving the seven girls from a Chelsea birthday party to her home in the Bronx. The girls ranged from 11 to 14 years of age. They were crammed inside her car, many not wearing seat-belts.
The slumber party started Friday night. It was stated the girls were having such a good time they wanted to stay another night. The parents met their girls at the Chelsea party Saturday night to give them a change of clothes. Witnesses have stated Huertas started drinking at the Chelsea party. It was also stated Huertas was the only one drinking at the party.
According to police, Huertas had a blood alcohol level of 0.132. The legal limit is 0.08. She failed a Breathalyzer test at the scene of the accident. They also took her blood to determine her alcohol content at the hospital.
Huertas suffered a broken arm and blunt forced trauma in the crash. Her daughter broke her wrist. Police have said Huertas was charged with driving while intoxicated and vehicular manslaughter.
The accident echoed the alcolol fueled wreck that took place on the Taconic Parkway this summer. A mom driving drunk killed herself and seven other people, including four children.
