Obama: 'I Will End Don't Ask, Don't Tell'

President Obama pledged to end the ban on homosexuals serving openly in the military in a speech tonight, but acknowledged to a cheering crowd that the policy changes he promised on the campaign trail are not coming as quickly as they expected. "I will end 'don't ask-don't tell,'" Obama said to a standing ovation from the crowd of about 3,000 of the nation's largest gay rights advocacy group. He did not, however, give a timetable. Obama said it was no secret "our progress may be taking longer than we like." He followed this by asking supporters to trust his administration's course. "I appreciate that many of you don't believe progress has come fast enough," he said. "Do not doubt the direction we are heading and the destination we will reach." His speech to the Human Rights Campaign comes ahead of a march in Washington tomorrow by gay activists who think he's moving too slowly.

He said he was going to do that months ago. However, this issue is one thing that he doesn't need to change. Having a known homosexual in a military company would be disheartening and demoralizing to the entire crew in battle.

That's an argument of last resort.

"No, no I'M not bigoted, but there are some guys in the military who are. In fact they are so bigoted that having to work alongside a gay guy would "reduce their moral".

It's an intellectually dishonest way to hide one's prejudice.

You could make the same argument for segregating the military by skin color.

"I'M not racist, but there are some guys in the military who are, and if they have to fight alongside a black person it might "reduce their moral" and hurt America's safety."

This is also a strategic win for the democrats. Many of the religious lower middle class who vote republican also have high rates of military service. The republicans (and their preachers) have used this group's homophobia time and time again to stir up votes. Remember George W. "defending traditional marriage" in 2004? It will be very difficult to rally a voter who has served alongside somebody who happens to be gay to the "defense of marriage". There will be some resistance and anger in the military at first, but this takes the gay issue off the table in the long run for the republicans.

Name me one person that you know that is a homosexual and that can fight. Those two concepts are like oil and water. Catering to homosexuals is always the last morality issue that topples before that empire collapses. It happened to the Greeks and to the Romans. For America to remain a world superpower, America must not cater to homosexuals.
