At least 10 persons were reported to have been killed by militants who stormed the headquarters of the Pakistani Army in Rawalpindi. The gunmen were dressed in Army gear and wielded assault rifles and grenades and had tried to force their way into the Army Headquarters compound in a white van. They fired indiscriminately and hurled grenades. The attack had the stamp of the Taliban. When militants take over important installations like the Army Headquarters, it is time to sit up and take notice. Something is drastically wrong and people are surprised at the audacity. The inference is clear – militants have the power to infiltrate into the most secure of locations to undermine the confidence of the country. Reports mention of the possibility of two personnel being held hostage by the militants – also, the whereabouts of the Army Chief of Pakistan General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani are not known.
