Why Chicago losing the Olympics was a Good Thing for Illinois

Many Americans have been deeply divided by the loss of the Olympic bid for Chicago. Many say those who were in the relieved to happy groups are un-American, but I beg to differ. As a resident of Illinois, I, for one, can say that the state of Illinois was unfit to host the Olympics. We are experiencing a very difficult budget crisis, the likes of which are not likely to be over soon. The state is 3 billion behind in bills (http://cbs2chicago.com/politics/comptroller.state.finances.2.1232001.html) and has some of the worst corruption and squandering of any political system I have witnessed. The Olympic budgets are notorious for going over...way over, and we do not have a surplus to pay for it. Taxes would have been raised all over the state and they never would have come down again. In the midst of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, it would be illogical to think we need to spend tax payer dollars on something as trivial as the Olympics.

All of that aside, as someone who believes in global cooperation, I fully endorse Rio. No South American city has ever had the honor of hosting the Olympics, whereas America has already hosted it 7 times. Is it so wrong for Americans to accept the fact that we are economically unfit to have this honor bestowed on us, and at the same time be happy for a city whose chance is monumental to the people of that nation? There is nothing wrong with saying "We dont need it, give it to someone who does"

Chicago leaders hoped that hosting the 2016 Summer Olympics would generate millions in federal dollars to overhaul its century-old subway and elevated train system -- the second-largest in the nation -- years or decades earlier than they'd planned.

I agree. I also live in Illinois and although it would have been really cool to host the olympics it would sure come with a big cost.

Holding the Olympics in the US would boost the economy in a way by enhancing spending and tourism, but you raise a good point. I also question Chicago as a proper fit for the event. After all, with all the crime and corruption, it hasn't been such a positive place lately. I'm happy for South America. Brazil is home to some of the most remarkable athletes in the world, so it's a very appropriate location for a global celebration of athletics.

I also do agree that the Olympics was given to Rio, they deserve it, while the US does not.
