Oct. 11, 2009

Somewhere along the way in the strange political drama that was the 2008 presidential campaign, Ole Punditty managed to get himself on the mailing list of the eventual winner, Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois.

Less than one year into office, President Obama on Friday won the Nobel Peace Prize for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between people. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons," according to the Nobel statement accompanying the announcement of his win.

Here's what the president himself had to say in an e-mail he sent The Punditty Project. It is believed that news agencies other than TPP received these remarks as well, but TPP no longer has the budget to confirm or deny assumptions, common or uncommon.

What we do know is that the president's words, below, are in bold.

Punditty, signing off.

This morning, Michelle and I awoke to some surprising and humbling news. At 6 a.m., we received word that I'd been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009.

To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who've been honored by this prize -- men and women who've inspired me and inspired the entire world through their courageous pursuit of peace.

But I also know that throughout history the Nobel Peace Prize has not just been used to honor specific achievement; it's also been used as a means to give momentum to a set of causes.

That is why I've said that I will accept this award as a call to action, a call for all nations and all peoples to confront the common challenges of the 21st century. These challenges won't all be met during my presidency, or even my lifetime. But I know these challenges can be met so long as it's recognized that they will not be met by one person or one nation alone.

This award -- and the call to action that comes with it -- does not belong simply to me or my administration; it belongs to all people around the world who have fought for justice and for peace. And most of all, it belongs to you, the men and women of America, who have dared to hope and have worked so hard to make our world a little better.

So today we humbly recommit to the important work that we've begun together. I'm grateful that you've stood with me thus far, and I'm honored to continue our vital work in the years to come.

Thank you,

President Barack Obama

I read the email, as I listened to the text of the President's acceptance speech on youtube.com. The interesting thing is that is appears to be a summary written directly from the teleprompter text, with about half of it being exactly word for word. Personal touch...

Obama didn't send me an email about his win, although I do get emails from his staff every week. Way to go Punditty!

I'm not on his email list...but who is this guy Cheney who keeps spamming me?

I love the way your articles always lead. Very creative!
Don't think he deserved it at all - but that's just because I agree that an award such as that should be given to a lifetime of actions - not just words.

Dr. Denis Mukwege should have won the award in my humble opinion for putting his own life on the line repeatedly to save women of the Congo. He has treated am helped thousands of women who have been victims of rape in the ravaged land.

That's my take on a real peace prize winner. Not that President Obama may never fall into that catagory... but I think it was a political ploy to tie his hands behind his back much more than an award.

Well, I think they should have waited and gave him some time, what is all shiny and wonderful at first glance, sometimes ends up being nothing more than fake hope!

Nice acceptance letter by Obama. He recognises that the award is in this case meant to bolster his support as well as reward him. I don't think he deserves it either before having achieved anything, but it appears the Nobel panel agrees that on the international arena he is a force to be reckoned with.

No need to be such a skeptic about it. I don't think he deserved the award for his achievements either, but as I have said before, on he international arena he is a major force because of his moral stance.

I agree... I just think dictating a letter directly from the text of his speech is poor form. It very likely wasn't even written by him, but by his speech writers... He could have easily just composed one sincere email, and sent it out instead.
