He's not Bush

In the aftermath of Barack Obama's Nobel Peace Prize Friday, at least one Republican showed that he just doesn't get it.

In one article I saw this morning, RNC Chairman Michael Steele said that it would have made more sense if John McCain had received the prize for supporting the surge in Iraq, since the surge brought Iraq closer to peace.

I do understand the convoluted logic, and I remember someone -- perhaps it was the head Rushtafarian -- suggesting a couple of years ago that George W. Bush should get the Nobel Peace Prize for overthrowing Saddam Hussein.

Uh, guys ...You don't get the Peace Prize for war, especially when you don't manage to bring that war to an end.

There have been some pretty awful choices in the past. Two that come to mind are Henry Kissinger and Yasir Arafat, and the jury is still out on Al Gore, as far as I'm concerned.

But Obama was an audacious choice.

The Nobel Committee basically said they gave the prize to encourage him in the direction he's going, and you have to remember this is the first president in any free society to be elected from a minority of less than 15 percent of the population.

I'm actually pretty tired of right wingers complaining about Obama "apologizing" for America around the world. I think we damn well owed the world an apology for eight years of Dubya Bush and Dick Cheney. They didn't distinguish themselves in any way at all, and I've never bought the "they kept us safe after 9/11" rant.

Folks, 9/11 happened on their watch because they ignored warnings about terrorism and wanted to build Ronald Reagan's Star Wars missile shield, which these days is about as useful as nipples on a bull.

George W. Bush embarrassed us around the world, and I'm not 100 percent certain Cheney isn't some sort of human/demon hybrid.

No, you don't get the Peace Prize for starting wars, or for escalating them.

You get them for giving the world a chance to believe you might actually want to work for peace, and not just on your terms.

Michael Moore said it best.

"Congratulations, Mr. President. Now earn it."

Really well written post, Mike. I understand better now where you're coming from on these recent Nobel Prize posts, and I see we're more in agreement than I originally thought. These two sentences really resonated with me: "I'm actually pretty tired of right wingers complaining about Obama "apologizing" for America around the world. I think we damn well owed the world an apology for eight years of Dubya Bush and Dick Cheney."

When ever you qoute or mention Michael Moore it tells a lot about a person or should I say lack of!

"The Nobel Committee basically said they gave the prize to encourage him in the direction he's going, and you have to remember this is the first president in any free society to be elected from a minority of less than 15 percent of the population"

The deadline for nominations for the prize was less than two weeks after he took office. Two weeks. That makes it appear that he was awarded the prize based on his campaign rhetoric, and as a form of Eurocentric affirmative action.

I agree with Michael Moore's statement; it appears that occasionally, even blind squirrels pick up acorns.

To be fair, from his comments after the award, it appears that Obama was overwhelmed and felt undeserving. I also think he feels that the award puts more pressure on him to perform, which it does...

Mhmmm...sorry, I thought that AllVoices was a news-site where people could participate to REPORT news... this article is full of too much personal expressions - I, folks, guys, ecc... - and individual thoughts rather than facts or news...

Ricky: not only is All Voices becoming an opinion site, but it is also allowing poeple to make three or four articles of the EXACT same topic and material-copies of one another-if a newby came along, they would wonder if they had a voice at all and if their article would even garner attention with all of the monopoly here...

Very good point; most of the content is editorial not news, though some news does get through. Editorials are good stuff, but when they're presented as news, they begin to lack any real credibility.

Allvoices is a global, open-media news site where anyone can report from anywhere.

Editors don't choose what story gets front-page billing on our site–you do. When a report is first posted, our proprietary system validates the story's relevance, adding related news, photos, video, and Allvoices contributor reports within minutes. Then the Allvoices community steps in, adding their own news and media to each report, as well as commenting on and ranking the story. The more buzz a report gets, the higher up it moves.

We believe that everyone has a story to tell, and that one voice can ignite a global conversation. We envision a true "people's media," where each report generates multiple points of view and a direct, emotional connection to what really matters.

"We believe that everyone has a story to tell"

sounds like news plus opinion to me

lecia: so you're saying that All Voicers in general want several of the same article posted and read each one hoping for a different view or context even if it's unlikely because they were all written by the same person posted at the same time? I would rather read about the same topic by DIFFERENT users with DIFFERENT experiences, but I guess that's just me. I guess I should proliferate All Voices with a bunch of articles of the same content and opinion and rheteric to see if I have the same success....

"Folks, 9/11 happened on their watch"

well lets see bush had been in office for 8 months when 9/11 happened and according to you and the other obamites that's not enough time to make in roads to the mess he inherited...so with your logic, clinton is responsible for 9/11

When writing a comment, it could be an opinion! I see nothing wrong with that.
  • Reply By firesisle firesisle | about 1 month ago
nope... nothing wrong at all; it is a blog site as well, after all. Opinions and editorial comment are fine, and in fact, one of the reasons I frequent the site. It's when editorial comment is bundled up and presented as news that I object. Of course, it's the same as with the "news" papers. They spin everything as well.
  • Reply By Ricky7524 Ricky7524 | about 1 month ago
Yes, that's right for "comment", but not for "report"... you can't confuse the meanings of the two words. It could be interesting if one of AllVoices's editors is reading this discussion and he/she could give his/her opinion

Actually, we owe the world an apology for John Kennedy (Viet Nam), Henry Kissinger (who pushed and promoted the "interventionism" strategy for "common defense" on mere political ideologies of other nations, and not direct threats to this country), Jimmy Carter (who although "intervened" with the Israli conflicts, set the course now for our continued presence there sixty years after World War II and for Britain's benefit most of all as the "creator" of that situation to begin with), and a host of other reasons - since our government was intended to be "neutral" with respect to such foreign affairs in such ares.

Trade with all nations, alliance with none. That is the basis behind our foreign policy as intended by the founders.

And Obama is along the Bush lines, and is carrying out the Bush accords signed with Iraq which called for withdrawals in 2010, and is also a globalist in bed with the corporate benefactors - so Cheney isn't the only beneficiary of this war. In fact, Silicon Valley and the venture capitalists behind sites such as this one are the truly main benefactors.

And although Reagan's Star Wars Defense System was costly, at least that was constitutional in providing for defensive measures, which actually has kept us safe if our government also did not facilitate civil unrest and wars within our own country by engaging in these costly foreign wars, and also failing to truly see the most dire threat and costly in American lives and property losses - and impact on future generations and their health cand well being - our porous open southern borders.

Since Mexico and its historic also corrupted government and socialized programs has meant that in order to also balance their economies, they have encouraged and actually facilitated the illegal immigration situation to the U.S. for literally decades. Which is not really a poor country at all, after all, and is rich in both resources and oil, and is based on a class system - all appearances of a democracy and even "socialism" to the contrary.

The Dons and old Mexican governance still reigns also in that country, and the new Dons appear to be the heads of those drug cartels.

And it is those living in the West and Southwest who are now migrating further and further north, as those that left California in the 80's and 90's due to its progressive socialistic structure, that should be a wake up call to Washington. Since the conditions and refugees status now of many Americans who are now homeless and jobless in that state is clear at this point that the Red Cross and feds are waging war against one country for the benefit of another, while neglecting its own at this country's imminent peril.

Obama and his buddies have been bashing American exceptionalism long before Bush arrived on the scene.

Remember, this man sat in Rev Wright's pews for 20 something years nodding his head to Wright's vile Black Liberation Theology, i.e. bash America, bash Jews, bash Whites.

That's all you need to know about his values.
