Tierpark Berlin - one of the best place for animal watching

One of the consequence of the over four decades of division of Berlin is the double naming of the streets and in some cases, as the one we will refer to soon, the institutions with the same profile. It is the case of the Tierpark, whose decision of opening was held in 1954 and the official opening was celebrated in July 1955. It was the reply to the Zoologischer Garten Berlin, founded in 1844 as the first Zoo in Germany, belonging then to the Western side of Berlin.

Tierpark is part of the surrounding park of the Friedrichsfelde park, a former hunting reserve, transformed into an English style landscaped park. With more than thousand species benefiting of almost 160 hectares, it is the largest landscaped zoo in Europe.

The main scientific idea behind this park was to offer an as much as possible landscape of the diversity of nature. And you could find here, from the famous poisonous snakes, to various kind of birds, cats, species of bears and monkeys. Special building were progressively built, to host and show a real piece of nature. One of the most impressive experiments, in my opinion, was to observe the bats, moving free from a tree to another, thanks to the opportunity offered to the visitor to stay near the animals and watched them closely. Interesting as well is the reaction between species that, naturally, never meet in the real world, as is the case of the cohabitation of the flamingos with the camels.

Last but not least, the Tierpark is home to two profesional journals and it is publishing various guidebooks, including for children.

Another interesting aspect is the way in which the local branding operated in the case of this place. From your first step at the Tierpark U-Bahn station, you find on the walls thematic wood sculptures, and the logo of the station is having, for each letter of the word, small animals painted in the body of the letter.
