Maharashtra is the financial capital of India and, whosoever rules this state handles hundreds of crores of rupees and sets standards for conducting business. Naturally, all political parties eye the delicious pie and want to exploit their stay in the corridors of power in the state of Maharashtra. Hence, a huge turnout of voters in the forthcoming assembly elections would be welcome. But, voters by and large, prefer to be busy in other activities on that day like going out to watch movies in multiplexes or for shopping. Therefore, the Government of Maharashtra has declared a bandh on 13th October 2009 – to ensure that the eligible voters take the trouble to walk down to the polling booth to cast their votes to elect the next set of MLAs who would run the State Government for the next 5 years. The normal practice is for political parties to declare bandh to protest against something or the other. Now, the Government itself is doing just that – on that day, all multiplexes would remain closed as would markets, hotels, restaurants etcetera. That would compel the people to go to the polling booth for want of anything better.
