A "Friendly" Wind Farm

The Haida Nation on British Columbia's remote Queen Charlotte Islands are about to reap a "Mighty Wind". After much consultation with various Government agencies, they are about to embark on a "joint venture" with the NaiKun Wind Energy Group on a $2 Billion project to harness the winds of the wild Hectate strait. It is thought the "wind farm" will be able to generate enough power to power 130,000 homes..in other words... all the homes in B.C. North of William's Lake! The project will employ over 150 people during construction and will continue to employ 50 or more when up and running.

The Provincial Government seems to be on board with regards to the project meeting future energy needs. There is also a sense of relief from environmentalists as there have been fears that the area was due to be developed for offshore gas production. Many, Many organizations have been dead set against those plans as the area is a rare ecological zone and is hammered by fierce winter storms. This new project seems to appease many needs both from its minimal environmental impact through to its viability as a non-polluting, renewable resource.

Many welcome this announcement as a "fresh wind" and wish it well.

They may overstate the benefits of the windfarm, but they don't tell you
the downside of it how the giant fans kill the pelicans, birds that fly
into them or wild animals that get ensnared. 7/10/2009.

Its great to see new jobs created by environmentally sound projects. Maybe Green will get us out of the economic doom.

Ddanielboone, I hate to tell you but this is the worst possible environmental news. The native peoples were bribed to allow the installations. Please see my article to see why this is an impending disaster: http://www.allvoices.com/contributed-news/3965036-canadian-galapagos-bird-sanctuary-threatened-by-proposed-wind-farm

I posted the comment below on the "wind farm" article you wrote some time back. Thanks for the "heads up" and important added info you provided!

This is quite an enlightening read for me! As one who has sailed through the Haida Gwai archipeligo and did fishery studies there in the late 70's I am disenheartened by the impact this will have on the marine bird life also. I would suppose the collapse of the more traditional fishing industry in the area has forced the peoples there to seek other avenues of employment and revenue. The forest industry (which supplied questionable jobs for a good part of the century) has also gone the way of the dodo due to mismanagement and a "bad" economy. Just a few years back there was much talk of drilling for oil in these same waters and the hue & cry from environmentalists, natives and many other concerned citizens quickly put the "kibosh" on those plans. For Now! My only guess is that wind power seemed a natural fit for the environment and appeased many concerned with despoiling the area via oil exploration. I truly appreciate your article for telling the "other" environmental side of this story! There has been much "bruhaha" in B.C. about this project being so "environmentally" friendly that other concerns seem to have been pushed onto the back burner! Again, thanks for this valuable input!
