Five Black Scholars Speak to Our Times

I've just read five articles by some prominent black scholars, Anne Wortham, Janice Rogers Brown, Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams, and Larry Elder. They were so incredibly articulate, and insightful that I felt I should share them with the readers here at AllVoices. I wish more people could see with their clarity.

I received the first article, by Anne Wortham, in an email. It impressed me so much that I searched for it on the web, and found this collection.

I hope you enjoy them as much as I did...

Quick note to Dr. Anne Wortham:

Obama's win is but a symbol of the times we are in, yet it is an important symbol to many. It is considered a turning point of encouragement, not for scholars (who have the taste of success fresh in their mouths), but for many non-scholars: underachievers, young Americans, the feeble, the poor. Sure zealots lined up and packed streets to support Obama. Ron Paul had many similar extremists bolster his efforts as well. Although such dedication is admirable, I certainly don't see Obama's win as a panacea. I know that it is a placebo, but I also know that placebos have been known to work. Obama won't work any miracles, but the results are in: he has offered a sense of hope for many.

Paul, who would have had--who does have--quite a struggle against congress, was my first choice as well. His losing the republican bid was quite an upset. It obviously hasn't hurt anyone that you threw your vote away on the guy who opted to walk away from the election, rather than move over to third party status. What you did was more than not vote for McCain and his allusion to 100 more years in Iraq. What you did was not vote. That too is a symbol, and it suits me; I wish I would have stayed home that day. You and I will never get that 15 minutes back.
