David Letterman will use his opening monologue tonight to publicly apologize to his wife and his current and former colleagues, according to numerous audience members. "Wow, that weekend went fast," he joked before turning serious during this afternoon's taping, his first public appearance at the Ed Sullivan Theater since Thursday, when he revealed the extortion plot that arose from his sexual dalliances with subordinates. "He apologized, he talked about how it was tough on his family and it was also tough on the people that work on the show and the women in particular, and it was real heartfelt," an audience member told the local CBS affiliate. Guest Steve Martin later took the stage and lightened the mood, opening with, "So, how was your weekend?"

Kudos to Mr.Letterman for apologizing. I wish for people would just COME OUT AND FACE THEIR FEARS and DO THE RIGHT THING. It takes a lot of guts to do this sort of thing in front of a live audience and with millions of viewers watching.

But you know what would have been funny? When Mr.Letterman revealed to his audience last Thursday about the sex allegations and everything--if someone in the audience would have blurted out "YOU LIE!" after his confession. That would have been hilarious!

Because, remember after Mr. Letterman stated what was going on,the audience just laughed. It was like, no one could believe it was TRUE! They were so used to always laughing, even when the subject matter was serious, people still LAUGHED! I don't get that.Ohhh well.

    Letterman is just playing it..
dont you think if you had a wife and you declared all your on going relationships your wife would have left you already..
i mean thats a very forgiving wife..
or they both are playing to get more famous..

What I would like to ask him is, now that this is out in the open... how would he feel about someone making a joke of him and his wife on the air in front of 20 mil people, like he does every night to others. Yes he apologized, but there is a long road ahead, and someone making a joke of it makes it hard to be able to pick up pieces. Then you have millions of people that you have been humiliated in front of.

I have to agree with you, SilentPrayersMom. When YOU become the butt of jokes, suddenly, it's not funny anymore. Letterman is getting a piece of his own pie right now and it's probbaly not the best tasting pie, either.

He did the right thing by confessing his mistakes. That took a lot of courage. He has a lot of fans/ viewers.

at least he went out with it and got serious when it came to the apology part plus i guess it was okay to start witha joke, obviously he is embarrassed and it was not exactly easy for him to do.what matters is if he repeats it or changes!
