The United States recently joined the UN Human Rights Council. It would seem as if one of the first bills that the US will back will curtail one of those rights. The resolution is backed by Egypt and it calls for states to criminalize "any advocacy of national, racial or religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence." It also calls upon condemnation negative stereotyping of religions and racial groups,"
My mother supports this resolution and I can see why. Religion, if taken seriosly, is the foundation one's belief. One of the big issues I have is that the resolution is co-sponsored by Egypt. Egyptian laws are inspired by sharia and Islam is the state religion so this is a rather thingly veiled bait-and-swith. Its highly doubtful that the OIC that dominates the body will do anything about Saudi Arabia and their persecution of other relgions. Then theirs the second part, human rights Geert Wilders, Ezra Lavent, and for writing books and honest reporting but were declared "haters." Presumably, these people would be arrested but not Sam Harris who wrote in his Letter to a Christian Nation that many Christians were so intolerant as to murder.
As for Islamphobia, where? Canada where Steyn was on trial or Britian where Wilders is being barred from entering, or perhaps his own country where he was arrested? How about that xenophobic right wing nuthouse America? According to the FBI 69.2% of all anti-religion crimes were against Jews with only 8.7% against Muslims. Meanwhile, my professors who would bend over backwards to defend Islam as a "religion of peace" did not hesitate to rake Christianity over the coals.
Diplomats say that this is part of an effort to reach out to the Muslim world. I suppose this is in addition to his address before Ramadan, his Cairo speech, and comdemnation of Israel.
National Review predicted that victims of human rights abuses would rue the day Obama joined this body. By focusing on such a resolution while ignoring very real violations, it seems that the rueing has begun.
