This weekend Chicago Tribune reporter Mark Silva wrote up a pool report about Barack and Michelle Obama's quiet anniversary dinner—and quickly found it flooded, on a Sunday, with hundreds of angry comments. Many focused on the first couple's use of a motorcade, which every president has used, but several dozen overtly racist comments had to be censored. For Silva, much of the day's vitriol has to derive from "the inability of a lot of people to accept a black man as president." The president and first lady chose a relatively modest DC restaurant for their anniversary and were back at the White House by 9:30, yet commenters brutalized them for supposed profligacy or indifference to fellow Americans. "It suggests something deeply troubling about the American mood," Silva writes. "It's time, we suggest, that a lot of people look a lot more closely at themselves before lashing out so feverishly at a middle-aged man and his wife going out to dinner for their 17th anniversary. Is it really the dinner?"

    'Let him without sin' and all that Jazz. Though Obama is also stupid. He should have known they would do that and just stayed at home in the WH and had a nice quiet evening with his wife followed by dessert.

    No, but it is politically stupid to do something that will attract criticism and detract from your political agenda when there is intense scrutiny around you and can be used as ammunition against you. I'm sure Michelle would have understood if he put being president as his first priority. He has to think about it that way otherwise he'll be a failure as a President, even if he is a success as a husband and father.

    It's not politically stupid. It's an anniversary dinner, personally I'd have a lot less respect for him if he gave in to the morons. Honestly, if he hadn't gone out, they probably would have found something to criticize there. I think you're mistake is you're acting like there's logic to anything these people do. In their eyes, he's screwed if he does, screwed if he doesn't. The man just needs to live his life and I'm glad he's doing that.
