Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Olympic Games. This was announced by Jacques Rogge, President of the IOC in Copenhagen last night. Rio de Janeiro beat Madrid, Tokyo and Chicago to win the hosting rights of the 2016 Olympic Games. Chicago received the least number of votes in the first round and Tokyo in the second round in the voting. Chicago failed to make it despite the campaign by President Obama and his wife.

In Brazil, nearly 50,000 people erupted in celebration when Rio de Janeiro was announced host of the 2016 Olympics, jumping and cheering in a Carnival-like party on Copacabana beach.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown congratulated Rio de Janeiro on being named host of the 2016 Olympics saying he looked forward to working closely with Brazilian officials on the handover between the two. London will host the 2012 Games.

Meanwhile, Rome and Venice are to bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games. This was disclosed by the mayors of both Italian cities yesterday.
