Are Women Having A Sexual Revolution On Their Own?

A new book by psychologists and professors at the University of Texas at Austin Cindy Meston and David Buss wrote a new book titled "Why Women Have Sex." They have written about scientific research and questioned 1,000 women on why women have sex. The book does bring men occasionally to contrast reasons but the focus of the book is exclusively on women and the complexity of women's sexual psychology. The study was done from June 2006 to April 2009 and they asked 237 different reasons for having sex. The study found that women have all kinds of reason for having sex from love to pure pleasure, to a sense of duty, curiosity, and even to cure a head ache. Also, some women just wanted to please their partners while other wanted to boost their own ego.

I haven't personally read the book but I find the topic interesting when I read an new article on cnn.com. Before I read this I was talking to a guy friend of mine and he said that women are becoming just like men now by having sex with multiple men, just to have experiences, and with no strings attached and emotion. I completely disagreed with him and accused him of just thinking that he just wished women would want it that way.

There must be some truth to what my friend was saying since two psychologists are researching it and writing a book about it. The results from the study found women's feelings of self esteem were influenced dramatically by sexual experience. Some sexual experience reported that they had devastating effects and long lasting negative effects on their feelings of self-worth, but for others the sexual experiences provided a soaring high and made them feel alive and vibrant. The 20-something women that were questions defied the gender stereotypes that women should be chaste than men and not sleep around as much. Many of the women said they were having sex purely because they wanted the experience, they wanted the adventure, they wanted to see what it was to be with men of different ethnicities and some women wanted more notches in their bedpost.

In the study they questioned a women from California named "Natalie Dylan" sold her virginity to a 39 year old Australian man for $3.8 million and the selling of her virginity generated national attention. The psychologists mentioned that there are more factors that influence a woman's sex drive than a man's. The factors that make men attractive to women were personality, sense of humor, self-confidence, status, and these factors are less important to mens. In the study they found that kissing was more important for women than men. In the study 53% of men said they would have sex without kissing but only 15% of women said they would consider sex without kissing first, and for women kissing is an emotional test.

There were other statistics in the study I found interesting. The study showed that 31% of women vs 17% of men reasons of having sex was to evoke jealousy in the other partner, 84% of wives and 64% of husbands usually complied when a spouse waned sex when they didn't want to, 63% of women perfer to have casual sex with a friend vs. 37% of women who prefer to have sex with a stranger, and 38% of women say they have stole someone else's mate for a short fling. They asked 1,006 women from 46 states, 8 Canadian Provinces, 3 European countries, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, and China and a variety of different ethnic and religious backgrounds.

In my opinion women have evolved to be more sexually expressive over the years and I don't view it as a bad thing. I don't think women can have sex without attaching emotions. I think women are naturally emotional and it's impossible to erase them. I live in Los Angeles and I do know a lot of women that choose to have sex as single men do and I don't find it wrong. I see a double standard when women decide to be more free sexually and these women are insulted and degraded more than men. If a man can do this and not be insulted for it than women should be able to have sex "a la carte" too. The men that have casual sex with women without strings attached are having sex with multiple women on the side and it can be unsafe for women most of the time. Men and women do not think the same about sex and women shouldn't have to conform to a playboys standard. I think men are the reasons why women have changed sexually over the years as a result of men not being able to commit. Men don't respect women for being one night stands, the women that brags about having a one night stands and multiple partners don't attract men, and If they do then they are attracting men for the wrong reasons. I think women today are more open minded about other women having sex like single men. In the long run women prefer to have sex when they are in love, that will never change, and they can't find it when they are sleeping around like it's Sex And The City.
