In a highly unusual moment during the taping of tonight’s Late Show, David Letterman told his studio audience that his sexual relationships with show staffers had been the basis for an extortion attempt. The con man, who wanted $2 million, was arrested today as part of a sting operation by the Manhattan district attorney, the Daily News reports. “My response to that is, yes I have,” Letterman, 62, said of his testimony before a grand jury. “Would it be embarrassing if it were made public? Perhaps it would. I feel like I need to protect these people—I need to certainly protect my family.” A CBS rep wouldn’t elaborate on the statement; Letterman has been with Regina Lasko since 1986, and married to her since March, Variety notes.
