As many of us know, having a pet brings health benefits and happiness. To reap the most rewards from having a pet, and to keep your pet happy, it is important to spend time together. Here are some great ways to bond with your fuzzy (scaly, feathered) friend.

Toys! Rattles, strings, balls. Shake them, throw them, jingle them in their cage. Get their attention and keep them active! Pets need exercise too.

Walking. Dogs, horses. Large pets need to get out and move around. For dogs, see if there are doggy parks near you! No traffic, room to throw a frisbee, and maybe even make some new friends.

Take them with you. Some pets love car rides - there are insurance options to cover your pets. Check with your auto insurance or your veterinarian. Just don't leave your pet in the car too long by themselves - ESPECIALLY on hot days. Use good judgement.

Let them sit with you. They love you, they want to kiss you and snuggle - okay, sometimes! But if you let them, your bond will grow. Try it, I think you'll like it. Exception: when you're eating. They'll steal your food (in my experience!)

If you have an unusual pet, or just aren't sure what's best, check with your veterinarian. I'm sure you'll get some great ideas.

Bottom line: Play with your pets every day! You won't regret it.

Love this article! I agree, the more attention you give your pets, the more you get back. Pets are priceless. Plus, they don't roll their eyes at you when you talk (like my teenagers are known to do).

The last dog I had was Bimbo. He had to be Bimbo from when he was a pup
because he had a tail like a rabbit and the way he jumped around I called
him Bimbo and he was funny and a white color. One evening he came home and
just fell down outside my office window on the cement after someone gave
him poison, likewise to a female dog belonging to a neighbor. I found him
dead in the morning, the neighbor's children found their dog dead a few
minutes later. I never got another dog since and advised my wife against
    it also. 3/10/2009.

@rebecca_ruiz Most interesting thing about NYT e.coli story: using lower grade meat saved Cargill (& consumers) 25%. In this case, clearly not worth it.
