A group called the Invisible Children is organized throughout the world to STOP a group in Uganda that is Using children as soldiers to fight a war against their own government. Throughout the last few years, the Invisible children have been rallying in more than 16 countries, and 100 cities all over the world... to stop them, and push the US government as well as other governments to push forward and stop the civil war that is happening and killing thousands of children... As of now The Invisible children have gained support of over 135 members of congress...
Today I recieved an email from Senator Patty Murray(D) and she said:
"As you know, for more than twenty years in northern Uganda, the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) has fought a bloody civil war against the government of Uganda. Because of this, residents of northern Uganda have suffered from poverty and a massive refugee crisis that has displaced over 1.5 million Ugandans. Additionally, the LRA has abducted tens of thousands of children to fight against the government and to be used for sexual exploitation. On April 26, 2007, peace negotiations resumed in southern Sudan, but unfortunately talks again stalled, and the conflict could potentially escalate.
I am very concerned about this situation and have been monitoring developments in northern Uganda. Last year I joined a number of my Senate colleagues to send a letter to President Bush asking that the United States send a senior diplomat to support peace negotiations necessary to bring this long and bloody conflict to a close. I also joined the Senate to pass S. Con. Res. 16, a resolution introduced by Senator Russell Feingold (D-WI) that urges both parties to recommit to finding a political solution to this conflict and to cease human rights violations. Additionally, to fight against the use of children as soldiers, I am a cosponsor to S. 1175, the Child Soldier Prevention Act, which was introduced by Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL)
Please know that I will continue to support a peaceful resolution in northern Uganda and will keep your thoughts in mind should this issue come before the Senate."
Right now Invisible Children have a petition on their website that they need signed!!!! As of 9/30/2009 25,000 people have signed this petition for Obama to put a civil arrest on Joseph Kony (leader of the LRA) and to put an end to his Tyranny .
Slowly the Invisible children are gaining ground, waiting for the bill to move through Foreign Relations Committee and African Affairs Committee, but they still need more help! If anyone is interested in participating in events, or donating money to the cause PLEASE go to www.invisiblechildren.com and participate. You will find everything you need there to help support and save thousands of innocent young children's lives in Uganda!
