Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant laughs during the NBA basketball team'...

The National Basketball Association (NBA) begins its regular season in just a few weeks, but it is becoming increasingly likely that the games will be played under the supervision of "replacement" referees. Talks between the league and the officials' union broke off the other day and presently no new date has been set for further discussions.

NBA Commissioner David Stern criticized the ref's union for "badmouthing"the league in the media. The union retorted that Stern was "acting childish and not negotiating in good faith." The sides are at a definite impasse.

If the NBA officials are not on the floor come opening night, from where will the league pluck the replacements? Will it be the CBA? NCAA? Semi-Pro leagues?

They will probably get them from the D-League, the official minor league group for the NBA. David Stern used them as leverage during the NBA ref talks. The NBA will easily replace those officials in the D-League because those games are not important at all.

That's interesting. What do the Refs want that Stern isn't willing to give them? Hopefully the league can find better replacements. Throughout the last season and playoffs, there were so many ridiculous and unbelievable calls made.
