It's true that very little surprises me these days, even Derren Brown with his last TV stint but let's face it, with society nowadays it seems that ability is brushed aside and if your face fits then you will be accepted even if you're completely hopeless.
Obvious examples of this over the years have been Todd Carty, Tara Palmer-Tompkinson, Jordan and Paris Hilton, perfect examples. But if that is the case then I'm still looking for ways to explain this most recent debacle, he says as if an impending new Morrissey album wasn't enough to help keep faith alive.
In recent news Mr Brown was remarkably named statesman of the year by the Appeal Of Conscience Foundation being hailed for his alleged compassionate leadership. For his efforts he now has a week in Fife to look forward to and while he's hitting tees and downing wee drams of Glenmorangie at hole 19 in St Andrews let's split the term ‘compassionate leader' into more manageable chunks.
First of all we have ‘compassionate'. Does this mean compassion for his own people? Compassion for the environment? Or perhaps compassion for bank managers? Actually what does this mean?
As a country it is obvious that we are one that simply fails to look after its own. The government introduces a scrappage scheme in an attempt to stabilise economy (not the environment) by encouraging us all to buy the latest vehicles, which in turn helps Mr Bank Manager achieve his annual million pound bonu$.
Then we have ‘leadership'. I can't possibly believe there are many people out there who genuinely believe that Brown hasn't the leadership skills of a squirrel. Whenever there is an issue or election, where is he? Apart from the next time when he hibernates up north making his next most important decision of his career, whether to use a 9 iron or 3 wood he's always in some other country out of focus with his own.
So one would think that, like Blair a substantial portion of his time is spent in the States. Although Obmana praised the integrity of the UK prime minister he probably knows very little about him, outside of physical appearance. Witness accounts of meetings between the two are about as few and far between as group meetings of the Milton Keynes Historical Society. It's hardly comparable to the Bush/Blair relationship. Even MP Shaun Woodward stated that "I've run out of the fingers on one hand counting the conversations between Brown and Obama."
So do we all think Mr Brown deserves this award, or any? Personally I would like to see the PM on ‘The Weakest Link' or in a wrestling ring with Piers Morgan or Jeremy Paxman or could that potentially be too Borat?
