now in Afghanistan....will we win this one?

This year alone, Great Britain lost 216 of their soldiers in Afghanistan. Canada lost its 131st, Denmark its 25th,Italy its 20th,and Poland, where a majority of its people want an immediate withdrawal, lost its 12th. Even as other nations are running away from Afghanistan and other worn torn areas nearby, our nation is currently sending 45,000 more troops into Afghanistan alone! Are we the only ones who can't get our heads out of the sand and see what a huge mistake this will be?

The Talibanis currently fighting with 100,000 troops in peaceful Afghanistan regions like Kunduz and Baghlan. Pour in upwards of 200,000 troops, from America as well as other nations, and it is a given that more Afghanistan people will convert to the Taliban-not only to protect themselves and insure that they are not caught in the crossfire, but because they don't want foreign troops in their country.

The country of Afghanistan won't be the only region under our military attack. Neighboring Pakistan, where so many American politicians believe Osama Bin Laden is still hiding out, will also be overrun be troop insurgency.

According to Pakistani media, it has been reported that the United States plans to deploy a large number of marines with the plan to expand its embassy in Islamabad. Our country is demanding Pakistan to give 700,000 acres of their land to build a super-sized military base there. What I am dying to know is, how the hell are we going to get the money to accomplish that? I am all for protecting our country and helping another country in need, but we aren't wanted in the Middle East. Pakistan is furious at America wanting to take their Muslim land and invading their country. They want to run their own affairs, not have some Western civilization take over.

We are fighting another region's war. It is Israel and Palestine that want control the Gaza Strip. Let them fight over it. I can see how it would affect us in the long run, but it's going to affect us either way, so let's get our nose out of their business!

And Iran? Do you honestly see them wanting to work with the U.N? Have they ever been honest? What will stop them from not surprising us with a missile? What will stop them from surprising someone else, like Israel, with a missile? We need to get our noses out of Iran's business, but how? Have we really accomplished anything in the past eight years in this stupid war? I am a veteran's child and completely support our troops, don't ever mistake that. I am proud they gave their lives for my freedoms. But most of the “accomplishments” our government touts in this war seem to be misleading and then is further skewed by the media. Can you really believe our government or some of the media outlets? So, can we really stop Iran from making secret missiles by sending in more innocent troops? Defense Secretary Gates stated today that 'military action against Iran only buys time. The only way you end up not having a nuclear-capable Iran is for the Iranian government to decide that their security is diminished by having those weapons, as opposed to strengthened.' Like that's going to happen! Good ole' Russia actually believes the bologna we Americans are being fed that Iran isn't nuclear ready yet. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad doesn't fear us, he is probably laughing his ass off at us right now!

What about Georgia? Georgia’s ex-President Eduard Shevardnadze has condemned our potential deployment into their country, stating they would gain nothing from it. I agree. Tensions have been building with America since the war between Russia and Georgia last month. Russia has made it clear they want us to stop meddling into their affairs as well.

Russia also openly declared its ambition to rival the US in Latin America yesterday as Prime Minister Vladimir Putin promised to sell nuclear technology to Venezuela. Russia is eying the global possibilities of Latin America becoming a more noticeable and viable power in the world. Their rich resources as a country as gripped Russia's interests and now they are building an alliance with them in economic and foreign policy. It is also a way to “get back” at America because Venezuela has long since despised America and want to retain their own nuclear energy program. Nuclear warships were recently dispatched to Venezuela for military exercisesin the Caribbean, traditionally seen as America's backyard. This would be the first deployment of naval ships to Latin America since the Cold War. Venezuela would reap the rewards of this mission by receiving a cool $1 billion loan to buy Russian weaponry. Venezuela is the ninth largest oil producer in the world and a major supplier to the US, while Russia is the second largest oil exporter and has a quarter of global gas reserves. This new and improved relationship is colossal and will have everlasting affects on the rest of the world.

I'll close with this most shocking and baffling bit of news. It may already solidify your growing inquiries and concerns yet to be confirmed until now. The Taliban aren't making a killing by, well, killing people. They aren't making a good living in the poppy business as once thought. They are mostly funded by foreign donations. Yes, that's right folks. The CIA recently estimated that Taliban leaders and their allies received $106 million in the past year from donors outside Afghanistan! Aren't you proud of where your tax dollars are going?

For the past decade, the U.S. Treasury and the U.N. Security Council have maintained financial blacklists of suspected donors to the Taliban and al-Qaeda. The U.N. list, originally designed to pressure the Taliban to hand over al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, requires all U.N. members to freeze the assets of designated Taliban officials and their supporters. Despite the 9-11 terrorist attack, only a handful of alleged Taliban benefactors have been added to the list.

With the influx of so many billions of dollars, the Taliban has been able to spread the wealth and power of its terrorism across the globe. Extorting the donated funds has made the Taliban impossible to combat and the money even more impossible to track.

It is so easy to hand money over to a cause one believes in and then when things get out of hand and innocent people are killed say that the money you donated was not intended for terrorist/freedom fighter activities.
That way one keeps ones own hands clean and although one has indirectly condoned the death of innocents one can feel that it was not a personal choice and therefore innocence prevails.
I also need to ask the question, can the world afford to have peace? In other words how many millions of people from all sides are gainfully employed in the acts of war be they the troops on the ground or the organisers at the top of the hill?
    Interest article as always, thanks

I think Brigid says it very well; keeping that perspective in mind, and the strategic objectives that great powers have and why, this article doesn' really make sense.
  • Posted By AKADE777 AKADE777 | 2 months ago
I believe you fail to understand my point Changez, and being negative without reason. My point in my article was that we need to get the heck out of other people's business and let them fight their own battles. It doesn't matter if we are the world leader. We have made ourselves hated and criticzed for our flandering mistakes.Additionally,as Brigid so wonderfully pointed out, our government doesn't know where the hell they are sending our tax dollars. They need to have a better grip on those things. That's why our economy is in the toilet because politicians can't manage the budget correctly.I agree with Brigid, that politicians are making excuses for their poor decisions. Before you say my article doesn't make sense, examine whether it's actually a difference of opinion that you may actually have with me. From that perspective, I would have more understanding and respect towards what you have to say.ASHER KADE VIA MOBILE

    1) "And Iran? Do you honestly see them wanting to work with the U.N? Have they ever been honest? What will stop them from not surprising us with a missile? What will stop them from surprising someone else, like Israel, with a missile?" - They do work with the UN, and the IAEA.

Whatever you heard and your sources, I'm sure at this point about 98% of what is published for public consumption at this point is spin.

Since the same banks that fund the Taliban fund our bank. And those "donations" are simply billed to the American people in order for the world's central bankers to play chess with countries - sort of like a Risk game. Since the fund the Russians, the U.S., the Venezualan government, Saudis, all countries with the exception of about four or five, and those are the countries which are on the enemies lists right now of all the major powers.

So you actually still haven't gotten to the root of what is really going on here, and who is manipulating all these wars and conflicts in the slightest. And who stands to benefit most, since war does stimulate the bankers and their economies. Not peace.

Again, I was just making a news opinion article and all my information came from the ones attached to my article, nowhere else. Plenty of people here and elsewhere on the net make news opinion reports, why can't I? Another thing, I know that news reports or the media is skewed, again, though weak, I did point that out in my article. It just wasn't my biggest issue I wanted to address because, duh, we all know that the media is skewed! I always or almost always use independent news sources, so the information is less skewed. Lastly, I agree with Ross about how the money is probably going to other countries. But, since the Taliban is suddenly so wealthy (and such a hot topic) I addressed them individually.

You do have a right and it's a good article and you're right about the funneling of money to the Taliban. Can't win this because it was never about winning.
I'm the daughter of a Vet too and the neice of one as well. Today, after complaining about pain for 1 month at the VA hospital my uncle went to the ER. They found bone cancer and he had been living in vicious pain for a month because the pain meds were not on the VA "formulary." Today he got the meds. He's a cancer survivor from 5 years ago. Why wasn't the scan ordered by the VA a month ago. Previous cancer patient complaining of serious pain in specific areas? It's always and always will be about one thing - MONEY.

The VA thought they were controlling costs - I think they handle our vetrens the worst way possible - by denying them coverage for necessary tests in early stages of disease. Cutting costs. R=rationing.

Although, funny thing is, none of those bankers have any next of kin living in Israel from all reports, but in Europe. Where their "posterity" could be safe from the Middle Eastern dysfunction - and instead have the British and American's children do the fighting.

How did we get out of the first major crisis? WWI . How did we get out of our second major crisis? WWII. Are we in our third major crisis???

How close to 12 is that clock today.

Bring the troops home. Secure the borders, toughen our own strategic defense and hault financial assistance to other countries and feed our own and provide health care for our own.

Will it happen? NEVER - Ross is right.

" it is a given that more Afghanistan people will convert to the Taliban-not only to protect themselves and insure that they are not caught in the crossfire, but because they don't want foreign troops in their country."

happy you said that. I said almost the same thing yesterday and the loyalty to my country was put in question.

I agree, we need to get out of places we were not invited and are not welcomed.

I just don't know what our mission in Afghanistan is anymore. Do you? I thought we were in there to get bin laden and had to fight the taliban to get him.

I also find it very disturbing that the Taliban was a major force in stopping poppy farms while they controlled the Afghan government. And then we brought our "democracy" and with it more poppy farms. We destryoed normal farms just so the northern alliance people could plant poppy. At the same time we spend I don't know what on the War on Drugs.

Teh American military can not fight a guerilla war, in my opinion, but the American CIA and special forces can. So I have no probllem eradicating Al qaeda and getting rid off bin laden and getting the hell out of that region, militarly. But I have a problem with trying to make a nation in our image. A nation that has taken over 200 years to make itself.

how quickly we forget that when our nation was born, we did not recognize teh rights of women and slaves. That through our history, we have persecuted the poor and mentally handicapped and people with foreign ancestry. We have done many horrible things, and will do many more in the future. what right do we have to set up a government in another country, in another hemisphere?

Either get bin laden or bring the troops back home. I miss some of my friends that are there. I don't want them to die. They were and are great Americans. And I miss them a lot.

That's what I feel about Afghanistan and Iraq. Iran is another situation thoug, in my opinion. If the U.S. and I guess also Russia have decided they are going to try this whole nucleardisarmament thing, then it is okay by me that they convince the Iranis that they should not have any either. but if we keep our nukes, Russia keeps theirs, Israel tries to keep theirs then there is no point.

How are we to tell anyone they can't have nukes while we have the most and at the same time are the only country that have used them? Teh process won't work.

And there are a few countries who have been convinced that their nation is better off without nukes, it's worked before, let's see if it works with Iran. Bu t I think the only way Iran will stop persuing their bomb is if Israel comes out and says that they too are willing to give up their nukes as a cooperative measure. Just my opinion.

alas, the voice of reason! My dearest friend, Ibrahim Mahmood, also on All Voices, is frustrated by the way things are going over there, and he is still VERY MUCH a Pakistani national and in love with his country. I love my country, but do NOT agree with how things are going over here.I am proud my dad almost gave his life in Vietnam. I am proud, as I sit here watching him die from a disease he got in 'Nam, he gave me freedom to write about this and other stuff. I will respect Obama because he is our Prez, but I don't agree or believe a word he said. And, despite being a devoute Christian and conservative Republican, I don't Hate blacks, or any other race...as the media wants to portray!! Nice comment amalgam!!!
