12-year old Tinha Kausar of Class-VII had applied mehndi on her hands on the occasion of Eid. However, when she went to school after the festival, she was punished by the school Principal for breaking rules of the school that prohibited students from wearing jewelry and mehndi. The girl was made to sit outside the office of the Principal facing the toilet for the whole day from 8.30 in the morning to 3 in the afternoon. The punishment was extended for the next day also and was withdrawn on the intervention of the Education department.

That was very unfair on the part of the Pricipal of the school to punish the 12 year old. After all mehndi(henna)is applied as it something to do with our culture and tradition in South East Asia.It is applied on festivals like,Eid, Diwali, and when a girl is getting married. Was the head of the school from a foreign country?

fauzia - it seems the particular school does not encourage such practices ... applying mehndi is a sort of fashion statement and many schools discourage it among the kids ...

That does sound unfair, due to it being a cultural celebration type thing and since it does not wash off easily or fade for some time.

Two days of punishment is too much! Why that severe?

I'll admit, I'm not familiar with mehndi (I've only seen people wear it) but that punishment is just unfair. Sitting on the floor, staring at a toilet for hours?!
That's really disturbing.

yes mayuko - the prinicipal must be a pervert of sorts ... kids can be punished in many other less humiliating and tortuous ways ...

shirley - it seems the kid came back to class without completing the punishment period so she had to repeat it the next day ...
