Kudos to you Mike! You have come up with a brilliant formula to attract page views: get all the liberals and conservatives to go at each other.

And, I don’t blame you one bit, because I noticed your recent article “Did right wing talk lead to murder?” –which I found to be very thought provoking—just sat there with only 29 page views.

Many of us have had that happen on articles we have spent hours researching, writing, finding just the right image; than polishing up our “baby” to send it out into the world.

We hold our breath to see if it will be accepted with thousands of page views or sit there like the proverbial turd in a punch bowl—with only a few people willing to hold their noses and open that first page.

It is a total crap shoot as to what articles, headlines, subjects, or view points will garner those sought after readers.

So, what is a serious Allvoices writer to do? Do we sacrifice quality and integrity for quantity and sensationalism? Maybe a mix of both? I don’t know the answer.

But I do feel the tone and vision of the Allvoices community ends up being diminished more with every comment thread that escalates into a hateful, name calling, ugly, belittling, blood-sucking fest.

I try to imagine what a first time reader from Africa, Ethiopia, Colorado, Sneaky-snooze Idaho, or anywhere Earth--would think of such vitriolic rants.

I don’t imagine they would be very impressed and might consider not coming back.

I write for more than one web site, so I know that similar tirades go on every where, but I have never seen it as bad as it has gotten here on Allvoices lately. I have been called all the usual names and I was even told to take some PMS medicine before responding to a comment.

Heck, I even had one disgruntled conservative AV blogger write to me on my personal Allvoices e-mail, to further challenge and harass me. This person didn’t like my fairly benign “liberal” responses on a comment thread, so I was told to stop my “personal attacks”. When I defended my right to comment on any issue, just like everyone else, I was called names and told to “go to hell”. I didn’t even open the last message the person sent to me.

Frankly, life is too short.

But I have read interviews with the founder of Allvoices and she clearly envisioned a global community, where people from all parts of the world could express themselves and share the things going on in their neighborhoods from all corners of the globe.

I won’t presume to speak for her, but I don’t think these comment threads of late are what she had in mind.

Yes, I have written on politically controversial subjects, like everyone else, but when did the labels and name calling escalate from mild-mannered adjectives like “ignorant” or “sanctimonious” or “self-righteous” into mean spirited things like “idiot” or “bed-wetting" or “smart ass” or “go to hell” or “moron” or "piss-head" and other such negatives and profanity?

One thing I have realized recently is that the time it has taken me to respond to so many negative degrading comments, without any reasonable hope of changing anyone’s mind-- is precious time that I could be writing something worthwhile that might actually make a difference in the world.

So, Mike--I am one of your liberal friends, but I hope you will forgive me for not joining your comment thread to express my personal views on the meaning of conservative vs. liberal.

However, I do want to say “congratulations big time” on passing the 200,000 mark. You deserve it!

Delilah, I agree that vitriolic and insulting diatribes are absolutely out of order. Conversation needs to be civil. If it is not, it could easily lead to the demise of Allvoices.

I'm not for censorship. I tend to ignore rants and "flames." Last week, when, a commenter on one of my posts insulted an ally nation, although I was embarrassed by her remarks, I simply indicated my perception of the comment on the thread. I don't enjoy the pointless word battles.

I think you have expressed very well here a serious issue that Allvoices.com must face.

BorderExplorer,

I agree very strongly. I have noticed the abscence of some writers who were lead contributors when I first started in July. I have engaged in heated comments and I know that it is not an enjoyable thing to be verbally spit upon.

I don't believe in censorship either, but leadership from Allvoices on this issue would be an appropriate thing, before we lose more good writers or the credibility of Allvoices is damaged.

I didn't set out to write this piece as an article. It actually started as a comment to go on Mike's conservative/liberal piece. But, when I realized I had written over 500 words, I decided to do what he did and publish it as an article.

Thanks, Billie, for you comment and all the good, quality work that you do on Allvoices.

Delilah,
As a reader from BF Colorado,(some of us out here aren't really that provincial; *lol*) I think that vitriol is to be expected when you have passionate readers. As I've said before, people with passionate beliefs and opinions will have equally passionate disagreements.

A writer can only say what's on their mind, according to their own personal standards; because we're not all going to be graced with perfect vision and insight, we will make statements that will come under fire from other people and I don't think it's realistic to expect others to accept every word, or opinion we put to paper to be accepted without rebuttal.

As a writer, I feel it is incumbent upon anyone who choose to take that path to be prepared to defend their facts, opinions or sources; if they're afraid of the responses, they should probably find another hobby of occupation.

Questions and rebuttals keep us intellectually honest; they are the cornerstone of the political process, so political articles will always be hotly debated. If that's the writer's beat, they'd better be pretty thick-skinned, and have the ability to meet an ad hoc tirade with a reasonable reply, and be knowledgeable of the most common logical flaws, so they can a) avoid them, and b) point them out when others employ them.

BTW, firesisle,

Thanks for being the only sane conservative to come on here and leave a mature message.

firesisle, where the heck is BF colorado? :)

You make some good points and I agree with a lot of it.

The point I wanted to make in this article is the DEGREE of vitriol that has developed lately.

Allvoices.com has specifically positioned itself as a "community" web site where people can exchange news and ideas. The people who do so, shouldn't have to endure profanity and relentless attacks by those who are only hell bent on jamming their particular bias down someone else's throat.

That is not the same as people having an impassioned debate about a difference of opinion. I will always maintain that folks can get in their "digs" without pulling off someone's arm and beating them half to death with the bloody stub.

And I hear what you're saying... profanity, no, but political bias is something we all get touchy about from time to time;

I think a lot of it revolves around perceptions of what is reasonable debate, and what it "jamming it" and whether we're on the sending or receiving end. Then there's the unfortunate fact that none of us really like to be proven wrong, and when it happens, it's not always pretty...

BorderExplorer, I can see no other way either, than to keep things at arms' length and not take the bait from those seeking to play school-yard bully.

I commend you, Delilah Starling, for being bold enough to confront this issue.

Don't let the jerks get you down.

Birdpond, yeah, I have come to the conclusion that there are just too many people who are so locked into their own personal beliefs that it turns out to be a huge waste of time to debate with them.

Usually, the times that I have been drawn into heated discussions, are when I end up trying to defend someone else, who is getting ganged up on.

I think we just need to gravitate to the scores of extraordinary and talented people and writers here and support them and ignore the rest. Thanks for your observation and comment.
