Kolhapur was the erstwhile capital ofan important Maratha state and is dotted with some splendid palaces and royal homes.Kolhapur is also known as 'Dakshina kasi' as the temples here are considered amongst the most important in Maharashtra.

The town was also an important centre of arts, wrestling,leather footwear and Marathi film industry.

Here the famous holy temple of Mahalaxmi was built by the Chalukyan King Karnadev Ray and is a fine example of Hemadpati style of architecture.

The main sanctum comprises an idol of Goddess Mahalaxmi,weighte 40 lgs.

As per my knowledge,this idol is in natural form,not created by humans.Idol is a premeval monolith of uncut diamonds and precious stones.

The new palace was built between 1877-1884 and is the residence of royal family of Kolhapur.

Clock tower,garden ,lake ,wrestling ground,zoo,museum,swimming pool improves the beauty around the plalace.

There is also 200 years old palace.Here the Ranlkala lake is a most picnic site.
