The jobless rate in Michigan was the highest for any state in August, but that rate was still lower than Florida’s highest unemployment rate in Hendry County, a whopping 16.4 percent in August.
The last time unemployment was this high in Indian River County was in 1992 when the jobless rate hit a staggering 18.5 percent in July and August.
Gwenda Thompson, president and chief executive officer of Workforce Solutions, said Indian River County, and regions to the north and south, must diversify its economies to survive the cyclical nature of economic recessions and recoveries.
“My gut reaction to an unemployment rate that high is that it is startling and it is disconcerting,” Thompson said. “When I look at our four counties in the region, we need to think about diversification and recruiting businesses who pay above average wages and benefits.”
